Boys’ Lacrosse Team Flying High Into Playoffs
Newtown High School’s boys’ lacrosse team enters into the South-West Conference playoffs, which begin Thursday, May 20, flying high. Newtown will host Masuk of Monroe in the quarterfinals at 8 pm; NHS won 6-2 in the regular slate. Newtown is seeded fourth and Masuk fifth. The winner plays in the May 24 semifinals, with the championship tilt set for May 26.
The Nighthawks finished 10-4, concluding the season with a 14-6 win over Bethel on May 12 and a 9-5 victory over Weston on May 15. NHS handed Weston only its second defeat and avenged a 7-6 loss from earlier in the season.
In the win over Bethel, Jake Bulkley had three goals and eight ground ball scoops; Tanner Trede had two goals and two assists; Colby Harrell and Will Wallace both scored twice; Conor Breslin had two goals and one assist; and Colin Breslin, Matt Jacobs, and Ryan Ruddy had one goal each.
Against Weston, Ruddy and Trede both had two goals and one assist. Connor Breslin and Harrell both had goals. Colin Breslin, Sam Steare, and Bulkley all notched a goal and an assist. Jake Dandrea made 12 saves, Shaine Luzietti had six ground balls and five loose balls caused.
“This was a great team win. A lot of kids are stepping up and they are believing in each other. They found their identity and now we are hungry,” Coach Scott Bulkley said.
