The Genealogy Club of Newtown will hold a virtual meeting on Wednesday, May 12, at 7 pm. Lisa Alzo, this month’s guest speaker, will present “Ten Ways to Jump Start Your Eastern European Research.”

Genealogy Club meetings are co-sponsored by C.H. Booth Library and are held on the second Wednesday of every month, September through June. All are welcome to attend. Meetings continue via Zoom.

Alzo has done extensive research in Eastern European genealogy. She grew up in Duquesne, Penn., where many Eastern European immigrants worked in the steel mill.

She now lives in Ithaca, N.Y. She earned a BS in nutrition and an MFA in nonfiction writing, and her articles have appeared in numerous publications, including Ancestry Magazine, Discovering Family History Magazine, Family Chronicle, Family Tree Magazine, Genealogical Computing, Rocenka: Journal of the Czechoslovak Genealogical Society International, and The Association of Professional Genealogists Quarterly.

An avid genealogist for 26 years, Alzo currently teaches online genealogy courses for Family Tree University and the National Institute for Genealogical Studies. She is the recipient of the 2002 Mary Zirin Prize given by the Association for Women in Slavic Studies to recognize the achievements of independent scholars.

Alzo is a frequent speaker at national conferences and genealogical and historical societies, including the Polish Genealogical Society of Connecticut.

Members of the Genealogy Club of Newtown and guests already on the club’s mailing list will receive an invitation to join the May 12 Zoom meeting. Anyone else who would like to join the presentation is asked to send an e-mail with their name, address and phone number by May 10 to genclubnewtownct.secretary@gmail.com.

Those planning to attend are asked to log in by 6:45 to allow time to be admitted into the Zoom room.
