TOKYO, JAPAN — “Art Is for the Spirit: Works from the UBS Art Collection” will be on view February 1–April 6 at the Mori Art Museum.

“Art Is for the Spirit” features about 140 paintings, photographs and drawings selected from the 1,000-plus works in The UBS Art Collection, a collection of contemporary art assembled by global financial services firm UBS.

Contemporary art depicts society and the spirit of the times from diverse perspectives — from everyday events that one tends to overlook to unknown and distant worlds. These perspectives stimulate the imagination, give pause for thought, and imbue one with energy to propel into the future.

“Art Is for the Spirit” is divided into three sections: “Body,” which focuses on portraiture, a major genre of painting, “The Built World,” which features photography since the 1990s, and “Space,” which features works depicting the relationship between vast natural landscapes and people, as well as works that depict the universe and its elements, such as the moon and stars.

The exhibition features works by 60 prominent international artists from the United States, Europe and Asia, including Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Gerhard Richter, Andreas Gursky, Araki Nobuyoshi, Morimura Yasumasa, Sugimoto Hiroshi, Miyamoto Ryuji and Hatakeyama Naoya.

A key feature of the show will be the creation in the galleries of a luxurious “workspace” for the sake of art, a workspace that — complete with officelike work stations — will convey a sense of being at work within the galleries.
