The Rotary Club of Newtown spent time last week cleaning its namesake park and the surrounding area at Fairfield Hills.

Members of the local Rotary chapter were joined by volunteers from Ben’s Lighthouse for the outdoor event centered around the flagpole and grounds near the former Newtown and Woodbury Hall buildings. The grounds are also unofficially known as Rotary Park.

Originally scheduled for Monday, April 19, inclement weather that evening led to the postponement of the cleanup efforts to Thursday, April 22. Rotary Club member Alex Villamil said the group still “withstood the cold and heavy wind, and managed to make it into a fun and productive effort.”

With the postponement, the event — dubbed “Earth Day Cleanup” — ended up taking place on the spring day it was honoring.

“It was a tremendous effort by all who attended,” Villamil added. “Many thanks to the members of Ben’s Lighthouse for the help. They brought muscle and fun to the event.”
