St Rose of Lima School celebrated its annual “International Week,” April 6 to 9, with a range of activities.

While it had to look a bit different this year due to COVID-19 safety guidelines, St Rose Director of Mission Advancement Laura Moulder shared, classes still “traveled” through learning journeys around the world to learn about history and culture of the countries of study. The week kicked off Tuesday, April 6, with a flag ceremony.

Classrooms then studied different countries. Highlights included first graders donning chef hats as they learned about the food, culture, and history of Italy. Third graders studied Aboriginal art of Australia and made rain sticks. Second graders discovered Mexico and made maracas.

Fifth graders explored Ghana and they made and played the game “Achi.” The fifth grade students also read articles, watched videos, and did research to create travel brochures and posters. In addition, they learned about Djemba Drums and made their own. They also made kente cloth, combining specific colors and patterns that are used for communication. They shared Anansi folktales, which originated in Ghana, and created their own Anansi folktales to share with their first grade buddies. The folktales will also be sent to a Ghana school, which St Rose supports through Lenten Missions.
