Restricted Turn

Mark J. Zavatsky, 22, of Newtown, was traveling southbound on Hanover Road, operating a 2001 Nissan Pathfinder, around 10:09 pm, Saturday, February 27.

Zavatsky told police that as his vehicle was approaching where Hanover Road becomes The Boulevard, he looked away from the road and his vehicle went off the southbound shoulder of the road. The Pathfinder collided with the guardrail.

No injuries were reported.

Zavatsky issued a verbal warning for making a restricted turn.

Following Too Close

Newtown police report Richard P. Soderquist, 71, of Newtown was operating a 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer northbound on Glen Road around 4:40 pm, Tuesday, March 2.

A 2017 Volkswagen Passat operated by Nora K. Lovett-Knight, 45, of Sandy Hook, was also traveling north on Glen Road, behind the Trailblazer.

The Trailblazer stopped suddenly just south of Cherry Street, and the front of the Passat collided with the rear of the Trailblazer.

No injuries were reported to either driver or a passenger in the Passat, which was towed from the scene. The Trailblazer was driven from the scene.

Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue also responded to the crash.

Lovett-Knight was issued a verbal warning for following too close.

Failure To Grant Right Of Way

A 2006 Honda Pilot being operated by Virgilio U. Delgado, 52, of West Haven, was traveling northbound on South Main Street around 6:35 pm, Friday, March 12.

At that time, a 2019 Ram 1500 being operated by Jacob D. Nezvesky, 23, of Newtown, was facing eastbound on Cold Spring Road at the intersection with South Main Street.

The truck had a stop sign, but it then turned left from Cold Spring Road onto South Main Street and struck the rear driver’s side of the Pilot.

Nezvesky was given a verbal warning for failure to grant right of way at an intersection.

Distracted By Children

Newtown police reported a 2020 Alfa Romeo Stelvio was parked in a designated parking space on Queen Street around 11:34 am, Monday, March 15, when it was rear-ended by a 2013 Ford Escape Titanium being operated by Brooke R. Bayles, 36, of Hartford. The Alfa Romeo was being operated by Robert Lombardo, 53, of Greenwich.

There were no injuries to either driver, or to a passenger in the Alfa Romeo.

The Alfa Romeo sustained damage to its back end, and the Ford sustained damage to its front end.

Bayles told police she was distracted by her children. No enforcement action was taken.

Too Fast For Conditions

On Wednesday, March 17, at approximately 1:22 am, members of Newtown Police Department were dispatched to the area of 77 Hanover Road for a reported one-car motor vehicle accident.

Following a brief investigation on scene, it was determined that Aleksey Budd, 20, of Newtown, had been operating a 2012 Volkswagen Passat SE northbound on Hanover Road, near Echo Valley Road. The Passat crossed the center line and ran off the roadway on the left, traveling down the embankment on the southbound shoulder of the roadway and striking a stump before coming to a stop.

No injuries were reported. The vehicle sustained minor damage to the undercarriage, however, and was towed from the scene.

Budd was given a verbal warning for traveling too fast for conditions.

Flagpole Crash *revised*

Newtown police report a 2005 Volkswagen Passat being operated by Gregory Pategas, 54, of Sandy Hook, was traveling north on Main Street near the flagpole around 7:03 pm, Wednesday, March 17.

At the same time, a 2019 Chevrolet Silverado K1500 being operated by Daniel Lacasky, 27, of Newtown, was traveling south on Main Street.

Pategas began to make a left turn from Main to West Street, and his vehicle was struck by the Silverado. The Volkswagen was driven from the scene; the Silverado was towed.

Both drivers, and a passenger in the Volkswagen, were uninjured.

Lacasky was given a verbal warning for failing to grant right of way.

Verbal Warning At Flagpole

Newtown police responded to a two-vehicle non-injury collision on Main Street near the flagpole around 10:40 am, Thursday, March 25.

Following an investigation, police determined that a 2020 Toyota Corolla being operated by Catherine Bock, 62, of Newtown, was traveling southbound on Main Street when it made a left turn at the flagpole in front of a vehicle traveling northbound on Main Street. The northbound vehicle was a 2016 Acura MDX being operated by Kianpin Zhang, 48, also of Newtown.

There were no reported injuries.

Bock issued a verbal warning for failing to grant the right of way.

Traffic Stop Leads To Arrest

On Friday, March 26, Newtown police performed a traffic stop on a vehicle after observing the registration plate did not match the car it was affixed to.

Further investigation revealed that the operator of the vehicle, Wally Bellefleur, 30, of Bridgeport, had a suspended license and an active warrant for his arrest for failing to appear in court.

Bellefleur was arrested and charged with one count of failure to appear-second degree and one count of operation with a suspended license. He was released after posting $2,500 bond.

He is scheduled to appear in Meriden Court on April 7 for the warrant charge and Danbury Court on April 14 for the motor vehicle-related charge.

Locked Vehicle Stolen

Newtown police report that between 8:30 pm, Tuesday, March 30, and 5:30 am, Wednesday, March 31, a 1999 Honda CR-V LX was stolen from a Philo Curtis Road driveway.

The complainant reported that the vehicle was locked and did not have the keys in the vehicle.

DUI Arrest

On Saturday, April 3, at 8:42 pm, Newtown police officers were dispatched to a reported erratic driver in the area of South Main Street and Botsford Hill Road.

Officers located the vehicle and conducted a motor vehicle stop. After an investigation on scene, Abel Antonio, 39, of Danbury, was arrested and charged with illegal operation of a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol/drug.

He was released on a $100 bond and is scheduled to appear in Danbury Superior Court on April 15.

Failure To Obey Stop Sign At Flagpole

Newtown police responded to an accident at the flagpole early Tuesday morning that damaged one vehicle but did not injure either driver.

Police were dispatched to the area of Main Street and Church Hill Road for a reported two-car motor vehicle accident. Following a brief investigation on scene it was determined that Kathryn L. Barrett, 23, of Newtown, had been operating a 2017 Nissan Rogue S northbound on Main Street around 7:40 am, April 6, when a 2002 Toyota Sequoia SR5 being operated by Mercedes J. Farfan, 51, of Southbury, entered the intersection from Church Hill Road.

Farfan had been stopped at the stop sign in the westbound lane of Church Hill before pulling into the intersection.

The front of the Toyota struck the passenger side of the Nissan. There was minor damage to the Toyota, but functional damage to the passenger side of the Nissan. Neither needed to be towed, however.

Both drivers were wearing seatbelts. No injuries were reported.

Farfan was issued an infraction for failure to obey a stop sign.
