With concerns that ineligible voters may appear at the Reed School polling location Tuesday, April 13, to try and cast ballots for the 112th Legislative District special election, local registrars have posted a list of Newtown streets with residences that are part of that district, which also includes all of Monroe.

Former Monroe Town Councilman and current Board of Ed member and commissioner of the CT Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities Nick Kapoor is the Democratic candidate; Monroe Town Council member and former Parks & Rec Commission Chair Tony Scott is the Republican candidate; and former Newtown selectman and Public Building & Site Commissioner William Furrier is the Independent Party of CT candidate.

The seat opened earlier this year after Republican lawmaker JP Sredzinski resigned, citing family and new work assignment demands.

Monroe special election voters must cast ballots in their own community; eligible Newtown voters in the 112th can do so between 6 am and 8 pm on April 13 at the Reed Intermediate School.

Republican Registrar Erica Canfield told The Newtown Bee this week the list will be prominently displayed outside the Reed School polls in the hope that no ineligible residents approach the check-in tables, in an effort to maximize safety from possible COVID-19 transmission.

Only registered Newtown voters on the following streets are qualified to vote in the special election:

Abbey Lane, Little Brook Lane even #’s 2-16, Arrowhead Lane, Little Brook Lane odd #’s 1-9 only, Aspen Way, Lori Lynne Circle, Avalon Way, Lyrical Lane, Bayberry Drive, Marlin Road, Beagle Trail, residents of the Newtown Rehab and Health Care Center, Bear Hills Road, Newtown Village, Berkshire Road only even #’s beginning at 88, Nutmeg Lane, and Blue Spruce Drive.

As with the presidential election last November, on election day, local registrars are asking in-person voters at Reed School to help keep poll workers and other voters safe.

“Wear your mask, use the sanitizer, do not loiter in the polling place, and if you must bring your child(ren), please keep them with you and keep them from touching any surfaces. This will also help protect them,” Canfield and Democratic Registrar LeReine Frampton related.

Voters can check the Newtown Registrar’s Facebook page or website, as well as The Newtown Bee website and social pages for any special election news breaking on April 13.

As a result of ongoing COVID-19 safety guidelines in place by executive order, all 112th District voters are eligible to cast “no-fault” absentee ballots, which can be obtained and completed through April 12 during regular business hours, on April 13 from 8 am to 8 pm. Completed absentee ballots can be deposited in a secure drop box outside the western entrance of the Municipal Center across from the Community Center at Fairfield Hills, or can be delivered to the Town Clerk’s office in person before 8 pm on April 13.

A special Saturday absentee voting session is set for April 10 between 9 am and noon in the Town Clerk’s office as well. Any voter completing a no-excuse absentee ballot should check the box citing COVID-19 as the reason for voting absentee.

For information on absentee ballots, contact the Town Clerk’s office at 203-270-4210. For information on in-person voting and the counting of absentees, call the Registrar’s office, 203-270-4250.
