Unsafe Passing

Newtown Police report that a 2013 Buick Verano was traveling west on Mt Pleasant Road around 4:04 pm, Thursday, February 6. Melissa DiPrimio, 42, of Bethel, who was operating the car, was making a left turn into the driveway of 151 Mt Pleasant Road.

Meanwhile, a 2004 Toyota Highlander being operated by Cynthia Rotty, 64, which had been traveling behind the Buick, passed the Verano on the left while the vehicle was making its turn. The Highlander collided with the Verano.

DiPrimio told first responders that she was experiencing pain in her wrist but declined EMS and medical treatment on scene. No other involved parties — two passengers in the Verano, along with Rotty and a passenger in the Highlander — reported injuries.

The Verano was towed from the scene due to damage. The Highlander was able to be driven after the crash.

Rotty was given a verbal warning for unsafe passing.

Snow Storm Collision

Newtown police report that Jacob Anderson, 44, of Newtown, was traveling northbound on Philo Curtis Road around 10:31 am, Sunday, February 7, in a 2011 Toyota Prius.

At the same time, Holly J. Troccolla, 57, of Sandy Hook, was operating a 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo westbound on Riverside Road.

The roads were snow covered at that time.

Anderson started to slow the Prius for the stop sign at the intersection with Riverside Road, when his vehicle began to slide on the snow-covered roadway. Anderson was unable to stop his vehicle before it went through the stop sign and onto Riverside Road. The Prius crossed the eastbound lane and entered the westbound lane, where the front passenger side of that car made contact with the driver side of the Grand Cherokee, sending it onto the westbound shoulder and into a snow bank.

No injuries were reported for either driver or a minor passenger in the Prius with Anderson. Neither vehicle needed to be towed.

Anderson was given a verbal warning for failing to stop at a stop sign.

Troccolla was issued a misdemeanor summons and charged with operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license.

Aided By Good Samaritan

Matthew B. Ford of Boston, Mass., no age given, was traveling northbound on Boggs Hill Road around 11:25 am, Sunday, February 7, during a snowstorm, when he lost control of the vehicle he was driving due to slippery conditions.

According to the police report, the 2020 Ford Escape Ford was operating went off the roadway then struck the mailbox at 145 Boggs Hill Road before stopping.

A Good Samaritan towed the Escape back onto roadway, also according to the report.

Ford was uninjured. The mailbox and pole were knocked to the ground but appeared to be otherwise undamaged.

Verbal Warning

Emma G. Bogursky, 17, of Sandy Hook, was traveling northbound in a 2013 Acura MDX on Yogananda Street approaching Silo Road, around 11:45 am, Sunday, February 7.

As Bogursky attempted to make the right turn onto Silo Road, the SUV slid off the roadway. The front of the vehicle collided with a stop sign.

No injuries were reported on scene. Bogursky was wearing a shoulder belt only, and the vehicle’s air bags did not deploy.

She was given a verbal warning for failure to maintain proper lane.

Unsafe Backing

A 2014 Nissan Rogue being operated by Elizabeth Quinones, 47, of Bridgeport, was stopped for a traffic light in the left hand turn lane of Mile Hill Road, waiting to make a left turn onto South Main Street, around 12:55 pm, Sunday, February 7.

A 2004 GMC Yukon Denali being operated by Juan A. Ayabaca, 39, of Danbury, was stopped behind the Nissan.

The Nissan rolled backward and the rear bumper of the car collided with the front bumper of the Denali.

No injuries were reported. Both drivers were wearing seat belts. Air bag status was unavailable.

Quinones was issued a verbal warning for unsafe backing.

Railroad Bridge Struck

Around midnight Sunday, February 7, a commercial truck of unknown type struck the Botsford Hill Road railroad bridge and then left the scene.

Debris left behind indicates the vehicle had a box-type body.

Failure To Grant Right Of Way

A 2005 GMC Sierra K3500 pickup truck being operated by Charles V. Dedufour, 59, of Roxbury, was pulling out from the private driveway of 116 South Main Street around 4:57 pm, Monday, February 8.

At the same time, Holly Ann Bartlett, 52, of Newtown, was operating a 2012 Subaru Outback 2.5i four-door wagon southbound on South Main Street in the immediate vicinity.

Dedufour told police that he attempted to pull around a non-contact vehicle that was waiting to make a left turn onto South Main Street but ended up pulling out too far, striking the passenger side of the station wagon with the truck.

Neither vehicle’s air bags deployed, and no injuries were reported.

Dedufour was given a verbal warning for failure to grant right of way from a private drive.

Improper Turn

Newtown police report that Jason E. Powell, 41, of Newtown, was traveling northbound on Waterview Drive, plowing the roadway in the area of Dock Drive, around 11:32 am, Tuesday, February 9.

Powell was operating a 2006 Volvo dump truck. While negotiating a curve in the roadway, the passenger side of the plow made contact with a utility pole. The impact caused the pole to break in half.

Powell, who was wearing a seat belt, was not injured. He was issued a verbal warning for making an improper turn. The roadway was temporary closed until the pole could be repaired.

Arrested On Two Charges

Newtown Police report they arrested Rashelle A. Moya, 22, of Danbury after responding to CVS Pharmacy, 6 Queen Street, on Wednesday, February 10.

Police were dispatched to the pharmacy on a report of an individual attempting to obtain controlled substances under false pretenses.

Upon investigation Moya was arrested and charged with one count of criminal attempt to possess a controlled substance other than less than one-half ounce of a cannabis-type substance and one count of forged prescription.

Moya was processed and released on a $1,000 non-surety bond with a court date of February 25.

Failure To Maintain Lane

Sulpicio Gonzalez-Cruz, 31, of Bridgeport, was operating a 2002 Toyota Camry LE northbound on South Main Street near Greenbriar Lane around 4:52 am, Thursday, February 11.

According to the police report, Gonzalez-Cruz lost control of the vehicle on the snowy road. The vehicle struck two wood guardrail posts in front of 91 South Main Street.

Gonzalez-Cruz, who was wearing a seat belt, was uninjured. The vehicle suffered minor front end damage, and Gonzalez-Cruz was issued a verbal warning for failure to maintain lane.

Too Fast For Snowy Conditions

A 2009 Honda Civic LX being operated by Lauren P. Carrino, 20, of Sandy Hook, was traveling on Pine Street and began to turn right onto northbound Button Ball Drive around 8:12 am on Thursday, February 11.

At the same time a 2017 Ford F-150 Supercrew pickup truck operated by Todd Adams, 41, of Sandy Hook, was traveling southbound on Buttonball Drive. Adams stopped at the road’s intersection with Pine Street.

Carrino’s vehicle began to fishtail on the slippery surface due to snow-covered roads, and then lost traction, resulting in oversteering by Carrino.

The front left side of the Honda struck the left rear wheel of the Ford.

Carrino stated she was traveling too fast for the conditions of the roadway.

No injuries were reported. Both vehicles sustained functional damage and were driven from the scene.

Carrino was given a verbal warning for traveling too fast for conditions.

Sierra vs Silverado

Randall J. Booth, 50, of Southbury, was operating a 2012 GMC Sierra K1500 southbound on Toddy Hill Road around 11:23 am, Thursday, February 11. Newtown police report Booth moved into the northbound lane of Toddy Hill Road, just south of Turnberry Lane, to pass a tractor-trailer truck he said was stopped. While passing the tractor-trailer, the GMC made head-on contact with a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado K2500 HD in the southbound lane.

Ryan F. Delrossi, 33, of Monroe, who had been operating the Silverado, reported neck and shoulder pain. He was transported by Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps to a hospital. Booth reported neck pain, but did not go to a hospital.

Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company also responded to the crash.

Booth was issued an infraction for failure to drive in the proper lane.

Verbal Warnings For Both Drivers

A 2017 Honda Civic EX operated by Nathalie Castillo, 20, of Danbury, was making a right turn from a private driveway onto Church Hill Road on Friday, February 12, around 11:49 am.

At the same time, a 2015 Chevrolet Camaro LS being operated by James B. Malin, 18, of Newtown, was traveling west on Church Hill Road, near the intersection with Queen Street.

Malin was unable to avoid the Honda when Castillo pulled her vehicle into the roadway. The front of the Honda struck the rear of the Chevrolet.

No injuries were reported to either driver or a passenger in the Honda.

Both were given verbal warnings: Castillo for failure to grant right of way, and Malin for traveling unreasonably fast.

Newtown Police Officer Michael McGowan directs traffic away from the scene of a crash last Wednesday afternoon. Newtown police responded to the Main Street/Church Hill Road intersection around 2:36 pm on February 10 for a one-vehicle collision that occurred after the 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek seen here crashed into the flagpole in the center of the roadway. Police said the driver, Niko Zupan, 23, of Ridgefield, drove into the flagpole for an unknown reason. There were no injuries to Zupan or a passenger in his car. The Subaru was towed from the scene and Zupan was issued an infraction for making an improper turn and failure to carry the vehicle’s insurance card. —Bee Photo, Hallabeck
