Newtown High School

Lists Available Scholarships

The Career Center publicizes all scholarships of which it is notified. A few of the scholarships, typically national ones, request that money be enclosed with the application. The Career Center believes that students should not have to pay to apply for scholarships.

If a student chooses to apply for a scholarship that charges a fee, however, the Career Center strongly advises that he or she first check its authenticity through the FTC Consumer Response Center, www.ftc.gov or 877-FTC-HELP; the National Fraud Information Center, www.fraud.org or 800-876-7060; or the Better Business Bureau, www.bbg.org or 703-276-0100.

CASIA Police/Fire Scholarship Awards — The Connecticut Alarm and Systems Integrators Association will award one $1,000 scholarship and one for $500 to qualified graduating seniors from Connecticut. The first place winner will qualify for national awards. Eligible students must have a father, mother, or natural guardian who is a full-time employee of the Connecticut police or fire communities (volunteers included). Students who are volunteers themselves, but not the child of a firefighter or police officer, are not eligible. An essay of 500–750 words based on the theme, “What it means to ME to have my parent or guardian involved in securing our community,” is required as well as an official high school transcript. Applications are available in the Career Center and are due by March 7.

Society of Plastics Engineers Scholarship Program — High school seniors who may have a career interest in the plastics industry and who would like to study math, science, or engineering should apply for this program that features renewable scholarships. Financial need will be considered. The scholarship application is available at 4spe.org/foundation. All applications are due by January 15.

Young Epidemiology Scholars Competition (YES) — This national scholarship competition is open to high school juniors and seniors who are US citizens who conduct an outstanding research project that applies epidemiological methods of analysis to a health-related issue. Scholarship awards will range from $1,000 in the semifinal round to up to $50,000 for the top two national winners. Applicants must register online at collegeboard.com/yes. Written reports of research projects must be uploaded by February 4.

RMHC National Scholarship Program — Students of all ethnic backgrounds who face limited access to educational and career opportunities are eligible to apply for Ronald McDonald House Charities scholarships. Current high school seniors who will attend a two- or four-year college or university full-time are eligible. Applicants must be legal US residents and reside within the geographic boundaries of a participating Ronald McDonald House Chapter. Applicants must select to apply online or by mail by February 15. The application process is available at rmhc.org.

BrainDance Awards — BrainDance is sponsored by the Institute of Living and Hartford Hospital to allow students to gain knowledge about psychiatric diseases and develop a more tolerant and realistic perspective toward people with severe psychiatric problems. This art and research competition also aims to promote students’ interest in mental health care. Students compete at one of three levels: high school, college, and graduate/doctoral. The best overall submission will receive $1,000 and the top high school entrant with a research or art project will receive $500. BrainDance applicants must register online at nrc-iol.org and complete a project by February 1.
