Joseph And Barbara Borst Celebrate Their 50th Anniversary
Joseph and Barbara Borst of Sandy Hook celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary by vacationing in Maui for a week in July with the 22 members of their immediate family.
The Borsts, their five children and spouses, and 12 grandchildren stayed in six condos in Kihei, where they enjoyed the Old Lahaina Luau, snorkeling, jet skiing, parasailing, a ride in a submarine, a tour of Hana and the Hana Highway, Pearl Harbor, and Haleakala National Park.
The entourage included Jim and Laurie Borst of Sandy Hook and their children Wendy and Dylan; Michael and Glena Borst of Shelton with children Rachael and Justine; Joseph Borst, Jr, and his wife Kristi, of Wells, Maine, and their children, Alaina and Audrey; Liz Haugaard and her husband Peer of Mt Pleasant, South Carolina, with their children, Melissa and Erin; and Mary Marks and her husband Fred of Morristown, N.J., and their children, Daniel and Emily.
The Borsts were married on July 31, 1954, at St Kevinâs Church in Bayside, N.Y. They moved to Connecticut when Joe completed his tour of duty with the Air Force and took a job with Sikorsky Aircraft as a technical services engineer. In 1955 they moved to Sandy Hook, to one of the first homes in the Buttonball area development, and have lived there ever since, except for several years in the early 1960s when they lived in South Dakota, where Joe worked on the Titan and Minuteman Missile projects.
Returning to Newtown in 1963, he worked for Perkin Elmer for 17 years, and took early retirement in 1984. Then he was employed by Sikorsky as a contact administrator, retiring in 1994. Barbara worked for the Board of Education for 32 years as an educational assistant, first at Sandy Hook and then at Hawley, retiring two years ago.
Long active in local politics and community organizations, the Borsts are members of St Rose of Lima Church.
