Better late than never – at least for Kimmie Gates (6 and under) and Abby Atkinson (13 & 14), who captured first-place at the recent age group All Stars meet. But due to a scoring error, the two swimmers didn’t realize what they had accomplished until long after the meet.

It was a successful end to the 2002-03 season for the Newtown Torpedoes, who captured third at the Yankee League Championship meet (behind Watertown and Southbury). Depth – which has been a problem for the Torpedoes since they were formed in the fall of 1998 – proved to be the difference.

Nearly 30 swimmers qualified for the All Stars meet with their performances at the Yankee League Championship meet. There were 10 first-place finishes recorded at the championships – Peter Griffiths (11/12, butterfly), Mason West (7/8, individual medley), Matt Iassogna (9/10, backstroke), Sam Hoagland (9/10 breaststroke), Anthony Fiore (11/12, backstroke), Liz Gugino (13/14, 100 freestyle), Abby Atkinson (13/14, breaststroke), Kimmie Gates (6 and under, backstroke), and Sarah Hemingway (15 and over, 200 individual medley).

And what a difference a year makes! Last year, Hemingway failed to qualify for All Stars, but this year she not only won an event at the Yankee League Championships, but went on to finish seventh overall at the All Stars.

At the All Stars, swimmers are required to participate in five events – designed to test their abilities to swim all four strokes in competition – and there were outstanding performances from Lindsey Yingling, Abby Fagerholm, Mason West, Emma Atkinson, Tommy Gleason, Ann Pasacreta, Leah Barrett and Jacklyn Vanwaalwijk.
