Hundreds Of Newtown Residents Join Regional Response For Hazardous Waste Collection Event

A Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Day was conducted outside the Public Works building on Saturday, June 6. For five hours, residents of all towns within the Housatonic Resources Recovery Authority region could drop off items not accepted at local transfer stations.
Public Works Administrator Arlene Miles said last week that of the 1,185 vehicles that went through the line between 9 am and 2 pm Saturday, 655 of them were registered to Newtown residents. Miles said organizers expected the large turnout, and sent extra employees and containers to handle the collection.
For five hours, residents of all towns within the Housatonic Resources Recovery Authority region could drop off items not accepted at local transfer stations. Town of New Milford Public Works employee Charlie Coakley was staged on the eastern side of the Newtown Public Works building Saturday morning. Standing between the two lines of cars that went through the parking lot, he was holding up a sign instructing everyone to have their windows rolled up, and to have their driver’s license against the driver’s side window to prove residency. —Bee Photos, Hicks
