Early Thursday morning, April 23, Newtown Police Department reported receiving multiple calls about several parked vehicles that had been entered into during the prior overnight hours.

A concentration of incidents occurred in the Greenbrier Road area, but this scenario has also occurred in other areas across town, a Newtown Police advisory on the department’s social network page stated.

It goes on to say that several area towns have reported similar incidents including Monroe, Bethel, and Trumbull.

Police are reiterating their standing advisory to anyone parking motor vehicles in town, especially overnight, to “take your keys, take your valuables, and lock your doors.”

Police Chief James Viadero is also sending gratitude to Boy Scout Troop 70 of Newtown “for their thoughtful donation of gift cards.”

The chief said the local Troop solicited donations in an effort to support local restaurants in Newtown who have been struggling during the pandemic, while in the process feeding first responders, and hospital nurses and doctors.

“Well Done Troop 70, we thank you for the gift and our community should be proud of your efforts,” Viadero posted on the department’s Facebook site. “Our officers are extremely thankful and the cards will be utilized and shared with other first responders during the next several weeks.”

In total, the Troop made purchases from 13 local restaurants in Newtown.

Mailbox Strike

Richard Anthony Mariani of Newtown, driving a Hino truck owned by Classic Coach Works, Inc, on March 27, 2020, said he swerved to avoid striking an animal while driving on Berkshire Road at the intersection of Zoar Road.

The truck then veered back onto the road, according to his statement to police, striking the mailbox on the property of Carole Ando at 98 Berkshire Road. The truck veered back onto the road, crossed both lanes of traffic, and came to rest on the westbound shoulder.

Evidence at the scene supported Mariani’s statement and he was issued a verbal warning for committing a Restricted Turn.

No injuries were reported.
