All three of Newtown’s supermarkets are currently operating on reduced hours, and each is offering early shopping options for some customers.

In light of COVID-19, Big Y World Class Market, Caraluzzi’s Newtown Market, and Stop & Shop have all adopted these schedules. Each store has signs posted at entrances alerting customers to the temporary changes.

Big Y has updated the schedule it announced earlier this week. As of Friday, March 20, signs posted at the 6 Queen Street market announce “Reserved Shopping” hours for senior citizens (noted as those age 60 and above) “and people with compromised immune systems,” from 7 to 8 am each morning.

Regular store hours are then 8 am until 8 pm, “until further notice.”

Across the way, at 5 Queen Street, Caraluzzi’s has also posted notices for its customers.

Senior citizens, at that store noted as those age 65 and over, are welcome in the store as early as 6:30 each morning to 7:30 am.

“Please be respectful and reserve this time to allow seniors 65+ to shop. We appreciate your patience and understanding,” the note adds.

All customers are allowed inside the store between 7:30 am and 8 pm.

Stop & Shop, in Sand Hill Plaza at 228 South Main Street, is following a store policy that went into effect on March 19. The supermarket is open from 6 to 7:30 am for its customers age 60 and over; the store opens at 7:30 for all customers.

Stop & Shop is open daily until 8 pm. Online pick-up has been suspended.
