Wrestling Team Tenth In Class LL Competition, Track Athletes Compete In Open

Newtown High School's wrestling team placed tenth with 84 points in the Class LL state championships, at Trumbull High February 21 and 22; Danbury won the competition with 269. The Nighthawks had a pair of third-place finishers, as well one grappler who placed fourth and two who came in fifth.

Luca Manfredi was third in the 106 pound weight division, scoring a 9-0 major decision over Fairfield Warde's Connor Breheny. Ben Plaue was sixth at 120. Fritz Maurath came in fourth at 145. Steven Leuci was third in the 152 decision, posting a 7-3 victory over Kyle Vigeant of Glastonbury, and Steven Vournazos came in sixth at 160.

Newtown High School's track and field athletes competed in the State Open at Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven on February 22.

Rylee Harrell came in 11th in the 600 meter run with a time of 1:40.66.

Ally McCarthy was seventh in the 1000 meter event in 3:05.03.

Riley Powers placed seventh in the 1600, clocking in with a time of 5:16.78.

The 4x200 relay team of Bridget Lovely, Elise Barricelli, Laura Wong, and Harrell placed eighth in 1:50.54.

Newtown's 4x400 relay of Powers, Harrell, Wong, and McCarthy came in tenth in a time of 4:13.66.

On the boys' side, the 4x800 relay of Nick Jacobs, Aidan Budge, Will Tainter-Gilbert, and Andrew Poseno came in ninth in 8:22.05.
