NHS Winter Extravaganza Gearing Up For February 22

The 2020 Newtown High School Winter Extravaganza, which will feature 21 visiting color guard units, 11 visiting percussion ensembles, and three Newtown groups, will be held Saturday, February 22, in the NHS gymnasium, 12 Berkshire Road.

Doors will open at 1 pm and the event will begin at 1:55 pm with the national anthem. The color guard competition will begin promptly at 2 pm. Newtown’s Junior Varsity and Varsity Color Guards will anchor the first portion of the show with exhibition performances at the conclusion of the competition, prior to senior recognition and awards.

The winter percussion segment of the show is scheduled to begin at 6:30 pm, and NHS Winter Percussion will conclude the segment with an exhibition performance prior to senior recognition and awards.

The NHS Winter Extravaganza is open to the public. Tickets will be $15 for adults and $10 for students and seniors. Food, baked goods, 50/50 raffle tickets, candy, and air-grams will be available for purchase throughout the event. Proceeds support the musical, artistic, and athletic endeavors of the Newtown band and guard programs.

Competition Results

Newtown’s Varsity and Junior Varsity Color Guard units also competed on Saturday, February 8, at Naugatuck High School. Both teams placed second, Varsity with a score of 68.78 and Junior Varsity with a score of 65.39.

The Varsity team will compete next in the WGU Salem Regional competition in Salem, Mass., on Saturday, February 15.

Newtown Winter Percussion’s first public performance will be at the NHS Winter Extravaganza on February 22.
