Criminal Trespassing

Police said that at about 2:53 pm on January 22, they received a call from the Newtown Eversource Work Center at 20 Barnabas Road in Hawleyville, reporting that there was an irate woman in the lobby who was refusing to leave the building.

Police responded to investigate the complaint and found that Rebecca Carnes, 47, of Newtown, was sitting in the lobby and refusing to leave the premises unless the electric utility company removed an Eversource device at her residence, which she believes is physically harmful, police said. That device uses radio technology to transmit electric-meter readings to nearby technicians who remotely read meters, eliminating the need for the technicians to go to the meter itself to record electric usage information.

Police removed Carnes from the Eversource office and arrested her on a charge of first-degree criminal trespassing, which is a Class A misdemeanor. Carnes was released on a written promise to appear on February 5 in Connecticut Superior Court in Danbury.

SUV Vs Cables

Motorist Punam Gautam, 34, of West Springfield, Mass., was driving a 2015 Honda CR-V SUV westward on Interstate 84 about 5:34 pm on January 18, when the vehicle moved to the right in snowy conditions and then went into a spin, striking some guardcabling.

There were no injuries. State police issued Gautam an infraction for traveling too fast for conditions.

Hawleyville Accident

Police report that two vehicles collided at the intersection of Mt Pleasant Road and Hawleyville Road about 7:25 am on January 17.

That accident involved motorist Jillian Pratt, 29, of Sandy Hook, who was driving 2009 Nissan Murano SUV, and motorist John Romano, 35, of Derby, who was driving a 2016 Ford transit van, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued Pratt a misdemeanor summons for evading responsibility, following too closely, and driving under suspension.

Sideswiped

State police report that at about 6:09 am on January 16, motorist Andriy Hrishin, 42, of Southbury, who was driving a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV westward on Interstate 84, near Exit 10, sideswiped a 2010 Subaru Legacy sedan driven by Sandra Sanchez, 22, of Danbury.

There were no injuries. State police said that Hrishin caused the accident.

Trespassing Charge

Police report that at about 5 pm on January 15 they charged Launie McDaniel, 69, of Sandy Hook, with first-degree criminal trespassing after she went to the offices of Angry 8 LLC at 20 Church Hill Road. Police said that McDaniel is a former employee of that firm whom police had told on January 8 not to return to the premises, but did so on January 15, resulting in her arrest. After arrest processing, police released her for a January 29 court appearance.

Fairfield Hills Crash

At about 8:19 pm on January 15, motorist David Jutcawicz, 45, of Southbury was driving a 2018 Tesla Model 3 auto eastward on Wasserman Way and was traveling through its intersection with Trades Lane in the left travel lane, as motorist Lenny Almonte 24, of Danbury, was driving a 1999 Lexus LS-400 sedan eastbound in the right travel lane, police said.

When that right lane ended east of the intersection, the Lexus first struck a curb and then struck the Tesla. There were no injuries. Police issued Almonte a misdemeanor summons for passing on the right and for driving under suspension.

Evading Responsibility

Police report a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Berkshire Road (Route 34), Grays Plain Road, and Bennetts Bridge Road, a four-way junction that is controlled by a four-way blinking traffic signal, plus stop signs on Grays Plain Road and Bennetts Bridge Road, at about 5:13 pm on January 14.

Police said that a 2008 Ford Escape SUV driven by a local man was waiting at the flashing light to make left turn, when an unidentified vehicle struck the rear end of the Ford and then drove away from the scene. The Ford’s driver was not injured. The unspecified vehicle that struck the Ford could not be found.

Intersection Crash

Police report a collision at the intersection of Church Hill Road, Edmond Road, and Commerce Road about 4:42 pm on January 13.

The accident involved motorist Concetta Vontanhausen, 84, of Sandy Hook, who was driving a 2010 Subaru Legacy sedan, and motorist Jennifer Ciuffo, 37, of Watertown, who was driving a 2013 Subaru Legacy sedan, police said. The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported Vontanhausen to Danbury Hospital. Vontanhausen received an infraction for failure to obey a traffic control signal.

SUV Vs Sedan

At about 6:49 pm on January 13, motorist Sean Donnelly, 24, of Newtown, was driving a 2011 Dodge Charger sedan northward on South Main Street and approaching its intersection with Mile Hill Road, police report.

At that time, motorist Joan Bartolotta, 71, of Newtown, was driving a 2005 Honda CR-V SUV southward on South Main Street and attempting to make a left turn onto eastbound Mile Hill Road, police said. The two vehicles made contact in the intersection, but Bartolotta did not stop and drove home.

There were no injuries. Police located Bartolotta at her home and charged her with evading responsibility and making a restricted turn.

Warrant

State police said that trucker Granville Harris, 47, of Milford, turned himself over to state police at the Troop A barracks in Southbury on night of January 13 and was charged with trucking violations in connection with an incident that occurred on September 11, 2019, on South Main Street in Newtown.

State police said Harris failed to have automotive insurance and also had violations of trucking regulations concerning service hours and inspection/repairs/maintenance. After processing, Harris was released on $1,000 bail for a February 6 court appearance.

Truck Hits Tree

About 3:05 am on January 11, motorist Ryan Tani, 18, of Sandy Hook, who was driving a 1997 Ford F-250 pickup truck, turned from Walnut Tree Hill Road onto Schoolhouse Hill Road, after which he crossed the road’s center line, drove off the left road shoulder and struck a tree, police said.

There were no injuries. Tani received an infraction for traveling too fast for conditions and for failure to drive to the right.
