Charitable Initiatives Undertaken By Congregation Adath Israel
Congregation Adath Israel of Newtown recently held coat and food drives that were spearheaded by the synagogue’s Care and Share Committee.
Two deliveries of coats in December and November were dropped off at the Dorothy Day Hospitality House in Danbury. A collection of 75 new and gently used coats for men, women, and children were donated. Hats, scarves, gloves, and some boots were also included.
Individuals visiting the social services organization for meals were able to browse the items and help themselves to what they needed.
Prior to the coat drive, Adath Israel in October had donated 414 pounds of food to Monroe Food Pantry, exceeding their donation of 342 pounds of food donated to the organization in September 2018.
The Salvation Army food pantry at Newtown Social Services also received a large quantity of donations from Adath Israel members.
Sue Morse, head of the Care and Share Committee, said those who utilize The Dorothy Day Hospitality House and the local food pantries “were extremely appreciative and grateful for our help.
“Tikkun Olam, which is a Jewish concept defined by acts of kindness to better our communities and the world we live in, is a top priority at Congregation Adath Israel,” she added.
