Answering Warrant
On October 19 at about 10:09 am, Newtown Police report that Shawn Meehan, 30, of New Milford came to the police headquarters to be processed on an active arrest warrant for Evading Responsibility, and Following Too Closely.
After processing, Meehan was released on a promise to appear in Danbury court on November 5. The arrest followed an investigation of a June 2019 incident.
Outstanding Warrant
After performing a routine traffic stop at about 11:46 am on October 18, Newtown Police discovered the operator, Thierry Jean, 23, of Waterbury, had a suspended license, and was found to have an outstanding warrant for his arrest for failure to respond to a ticket he received in Ridgefield in 2016. He was arrested and charged with making a restricted turn, operating under suspension, and failure to respond to an infraction.
He was released on a $136 cash bond and was scheduled to appear in court on October 29.
Resident Charged
On October 18, at about 11:12 am, Newtown Police were contacted by a local resident notifying them that their son was using their vehicle without permission.
Upon investigation, Evan Brooks, 36, was taken into custody for use of a motor vehicle without the owner’s permission. After processing, Brooks was released on a written promise to appear in court on November 7.
Front End Collision
On October 18, at about 6:09 pm, Frank Frulia, 66 of Monroe, was traveling northbound on South Main Street operating a 2002 Dodge Dakota pickup, as Ranju Darnal, 35, of Bristol, was turning onto South Main Street in a 2018 Toyota RAV4. Police say that Darnal turned too wide, crossing the center lane, striking the front end of the Dodge.
No injuries were reported, but the Dodge had to be towed from the scene. Darnal was issued a verbal warning for making a restricted turn.
Two Vehicle Crash
Newtown Police, Volunteer Ambulance and Hook & Ladder responders were called to the intersection of South Main Street and Borough Lane October 18 following a reported two-vehicle collision with possible injuries.
Police reported that at about 7:59 pm that day, Chaslene Roxanne Judson, 37, of Middletown, was operating a 2007 Chrysler Sebring traveling west on Borough Lane and had stopped at the intersection, before turning into the path of a 2010 Silverado pick-up being operated northbound by Thomas P. Nelson, 50, of Milford. Airbag deployment in the Chevrolet reportedly caused the operator shoulder pain, and he was evaluated onsite by local EMS.
Both vehicles were towed from the scene, and Judson was issued an infraction for Failure to Grant the Right Of Way After Stop.
Possession Of Narcotics
Following a traffic stop on October 18 at about 9:54 pm, police arrested Sarah J. Lewis, 38, of Newtown on charges of possession of narcotics and possession of paraphernalia.
Police state that an officer stopped a vehicle on Berkshire Road after observing a broken exhaust system that was creating excessive noise. Upon investigation, police say the subject, who was a passenger, was found to be in possession of heroin and related paraphernalia.
Lewis was processed and released on a $500 bond pending an October 31 court date.
Traffic Stop Arrest
At about 1:51 pm on October 17, Newtown Police stopped a vehicle on Berkshire Road after observing the registration affixed to the car did not match the vehicle. Upon investigating further, police discovered the vehicle was not registered and did not have insurance.
The operator, Cleveland Thompson, Jr, of Waterbury, was issued a summons for Misuse of Plates, Operating Without Insurance, Operating an Unregistered Motor vehicle, and failure to display plates. He was assigned an October 30 court date in Danbury and was released.
Failure To Appear
Newtown Police report that on October 17 at about 3:19 pm, Lisa Terifay, 50, of Sandy Hook turned herself in after being made aware of an arrest warrant issued out of Monroe that stemmed from a missed court date on a 2018 traffic summons.
Terifay was charged with one count of Failure to Appear 2nd Degree, and was released on a $500 bond pending a November 7 court date in Bridgeport.
Rear End Bump
On October 17, at about 7:51 pm, Newtown Police responded to a reported minor traffic collision on Queen Street near the Church Hill Road intersection.
Upon investigation, police report that Sabrina D. Hull was operating a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee southbound on Queen Street, and had stopped behind another vehicle at a red light. At that time, police say a southbound 2012 Chrysler Town & Country being operated by Andrea J. Paltauf, 51, failed to stop in time and made contact with the rear bumper of the Jeep. No injuries were reported, and both vehicles were drivable.
Paltauf was issued a verbal warning for Failure to Maintain a Reasonable Distance Apart.
Construction Site Collision
On October 17, at about 3:43 am, State Police responded to the median of I-84 Exit 11 to investigate a reported crash.
Upon arriving along with Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue and Newtown Volunteer Ambulance personnel, troopers report that Mark James McCoy of Sunapee, N.H., was operating a 2018 GMC Sierra on the Exit 11 off ramp when it left the roadway, crashed through metal fencing, and collided with several parked construction vehicles, causing the operator “major injuries.”
McCoy was transported by ambulance to an area hospital for treatment. The vehicle was towed, and police issued the operator an infraction for making an improper turn.
Berkshire Road Crash
Newtown Police and Newtown Volunteer Ambulance and Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue personnel responded to a reported traffic collision at about 1:07 pm on October 12, at the intersection of Berkshire and Pole Bridge Roads.
Upon investigation, police reported that Paula N. Walsh, 51, of Sandy Hook was traveling eastbound on Berkshire operating a 2010 Honda CR-V LX and stopped to turn onto Pole Bridge Road. At that time, a 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 being operated by Rosman G. Calle-Mendieta, 36, of Newtown was traveling westbound on Berkshire when Walsh turned and was struck by the front end of the Dodge.
Police say the Dodge was operating in its proper lane and issued Walsh an infraction for failure to grant the right of way. EMS reportedly treated and released Walsh at the scene, and the Honda was towed due to damage.
