Fall Program Begins Sept. 9

SHERMAN — The Candlewood Children’s Choir, an organization formed last year, has announced plans to kick off its second season on September 9, with a 14-week program that will culminate in a Christmas concert on Saturday, December 15.

Auditions for new applicants will be held at Sherman Congregational Church on Saturday, September 8, from 3 to 5 pm. The church is on Church Road in Sherman.

The fledgling children’s choir successfully concluded its first-ever season on May 20 with a well-attended spring concert whose program featured works by Mozart, Purcell and Tchaikovsky, as well as Rodgers and Hammerstein, Andrew Lloyd Webber and others. More than 30 children from Sherman and the surrounding area participated in the choir’s inaugural season.

“It takes years to build a well-established children’s choir,” says Candlewood Children’s Choir musical director Jay Trott, “however, last year was a wonderful beginning. We are heartened by the number of families who were interested in exposing their children to the music of the great masters.”

The Candlewood Children’s Choir’s Christmas concert will include music by Bach and Mozart as well as seasonal favorites. Rehearsals will be held on Sunday evenings from 5 until 6:20 pm at Sherman Congregational Church.

The fee for the 14-week course is $60 per student or $50 each for two or more children from the same family Children from grades four through eight are eligible.

The choir’s primary goals are to introduce its members to the rudiments of choral singing and help them connect with a classical culture. Choir singers also gain a rudimentary knowledge of musical terms and basic sight-reading skills. They also learn how to sing in an ensemble and become exposed to singing in a foreign language.

To make an appointment for an audition or for more information, telephone Beth Trott at 860-355-2701.
