DARWIN, Compelling & Resonant Objects, Philadelphia — An exceptional early Nineteenth Century baleen, mahogany, whalebone and ivory presentation box crowned with a narwhal carved fully in the round. The back in incised with two 15-star American flags, an octagonal lighthouse and flensing tools. It dates circa 1800 and is of New England origin.

 

FREDERIC I. THALER, Cornwall Bridge, Conn. — J. Francis Murphy, NA (1853–1921), “Evening,” 1920, an oil on canvas measuring 24¼ by 33¾ inches. This painting was exhibited at the National Academy of design in the year of Murphy’s death and is probably the last important exhibited painting of his artistic career.
