ON THE ROAD FOR SEPTEMBER 3

Whether the sun is shining or the rain returns, the pavilion and surrounding

area at Kenosia Lake Park in Danbury will be teeming with activity Saturday

afternoon. Those are the hopes, anyway, of the planners of ectofest 1999.

HAPPY RHODES, THE MILA DRUMKE BAND and RACHEL SAGE are among the performers on

the roster of ectofest 1999, a benefit for The Women's Center of Greater

Danbury and Interfaith AIDS Ministry of Greater Danbury. Gates will open at

11:30, and the music begins at noon on Saturday, September 4 (good Lord, is it

September already??! ). Also on the bill are SLOAN WAINWRIGHT, THE ECTOPLASMS,

ROB BRERETON and DRAMA CHIC. The music is expected to last until about 7 pm,

and the festival will go on rain or shine. Kenosia Park is off Mill Plain Road

in Danbury.

Admission is $10, and tickets will be available the day of the event. The

rules of the park are simple: NO pets, NO open containers, NO alcohol, and NO

glass bottles. Picnics are welcome, and you should bring your own lawn chair

or blanket for seating (organizers are asking that when possible, use the

lower-resting lawn chairs to help keep the visibility lines a bit more open).

After performing an incredible (not to mention fan-winning) opening set for

ADRIAN LEGG at The Towne Crier on May 1, BILLY McLAUGHLIN is being rewarded

with a headlining performance of his own at the Pawling, N.Y., club on

September 23. While his name may be familiar as the frontman for The Billy

McLaughlin Group, the guitarist is on the road these days in honor of his

latest solo album, called Fingerdance . Tickets are $17.50; call 914/855-1300

or visit www.townecrier.com.

Also new on the Towne Crier's schedule are the following concerts: POPA

CHUBBY's return, September 24; ADRIAN LEGG, October 29, this time with Stan

Sullivan opening; THE NIELDS, November 12; and GREG BROWN, November 14, with

Garnet Rogers. Call the Crier for additional listings and ticket details.

The closest dates for CHRIS CORNELL, now that the former Soundgarden lead

singer has his solo album ( Euphoria Morning ) out, will be Sanders Theatre in

Cambridge, Mass., on September 13, or The Town Hall in New York City the

following night. Talk about your whirlwind tours: Cornell is working his way

across the country in a one-week coast-to-coast tour this month.

Another new date that has been announced but also without ticket sales

information yet is STING's return to Connecticut. He looks good for a November

24 show at the SNET Oakdale in Wallingford. The Thanksgiving eve show will be

one of the final dates for his late fall tour before heading off to Europe. He

will then be on the other side of the Atlantic through the end of March.

And finally, PHISH looks good for the very-quiet-these-days Hartford Civic

Center on December 12.

Here's your World Wide Web Find of the Week: For a limited time, Internet

record label SpinRecords.com is selling the Top Ten CDs on Billboard's Top 200

chart for $7.50 apiece .

The purpose of the 60-day offer, says SpinRecords.com president and CEO Wayne

Irving, is not to undersell other e-commerce sites or retailers.

SpinRecords.com is instead trying to draw attention to the as-yet-undiscovered

talent the Web site regularly features. So while you're visiting the site and

oohing and aahing over the top releases (everything from BACKSTREET BOYS,

BRITNEY SPEARS and RICKY MARTIN to LIMP BIZKIT, KID ROCK and SMASH MOUTH), be

sure to take a listen -- and perhaps even purchase -- the material being

featured at the same time by new artists in just about any genre you can think

of.

Until next week, I'll be seeing you... on the road.
