Mary Ellen Callahan

Mary Ellen Callahan, age 61, of Woodbury, died September 21 at Yale New Haven Hospital after a brief illness. She was the wife of Richard Callahan.

Mrs Callahan was born April 16, 1942, in Cleveland, Ohio, the daughter of the late Bernard and Genevieve (Mallen) Dockrill. She received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Cleveland State University, and a master’s in counseling from Michigan State University. She also received a master’s in school administration from Southern Connecticut State University.

Mrs Callahan retired in 2002 after 22 years of counseling children in Plainville High School, and more recently at Newtown Middle School. She was a member of the American Counseling Association, The Middlebury Swim Club, and Saint Teresa’s Church. She was a watercolor artist and her hobbies included cooking, gardening, and traveling in order to spend time with her children and grandchildren.

Besides her husband Richard, she is survived by two sons, Michael Callahan of Menio Park, Calif., and Patrick Callahan of Macedonia, Ohio; four brothers, James, William, Timothy, and Terrance Dockrill, all of the Cleveland area; as well as two granddaughters and several nieces and nephews.

Services for Mrs Callahan were held September 25 at Saint Teresa’s Church, Main Street South, Woodbury.
