Butterfly And Dragonfly Walk

SOUTHBURY — The Audubon Center at Bent of the River will host a butterfly and dragonfly walk on Sunday, August 1, beginning at 9:30 am.

The walk will be led by local expert naturalists Greg Hanisek and Mark Szantyr.

The meadows of the Audubon Center’s sanctuary are a great place to find these creatures in abundance. The public is invited to join Mr Hanisek and Mr Szantyr as they seek out, capture, identify, and release these beautiful insects.

“In past years we have found large numbers of interesting butterflies, dragonflies and damselflies, enough so that even beginners come away with the ability to identify some of the more common types,” said John Longstreth, the manager of Bent of the River.

Space is limited for this popular program so early reservations are suggested; call 264-5098. Suggested donation is $5.

Bent of the River, a 650-acre site owned and managed by the National Audubon Society, is at 185 East Flat Hill Road in South Britain, about a half mile from Connecticut Route 172.  The center’s historic barn is open Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm, but the grounds and trails are open to visitors seven days a week during daylight hours.
