Fire Kills Chickens, Destroys Coop

On Main Street

By Andrew Gorosko

Firefighters from Newtown Hook & Ladder, Hawleyville, and Sandy Hook responded to the report of a structure fire at 15 Main Street at 6:02 pm Saturday, December 20.

On arriving, firefighters learned that the structure that was on fire was a chicken coop located about 100 feet behind the Hintzen residence at that address, according to Hook & Ladder Fire Chief Dave Ober. The family kept the birds as pets, he said.

Chief Ober reported that the accidental fire destroyed the chicken coop, killing the eight chickens that lived within it.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, said Chief Ober, who is also a deputy fire marshal.

The shedlike structure was about eight feet long and eight feet wide, he said. A damage estimate was not available.

There were no injuries to those fighting the fire, he said. The night was cold with freshly fallen snow on the landscape.

The burning chicken coop was not near any other structures and did not pose a fire threat to other buildings, the fire chief said.

The fire was relatively easy to extinguish, with firefighters putting out the blaze with the water carried on a fire truck, Chief Ober said.
