The newest U14 girlsâ traveling softball team â formed last fall â defeated the Watertown Rapids, 17-6, on Tuesday for their inaugural win. Valerie Nezvesky doubled twice and singled twice while Ashley Ferris singled, doubled and tripled.
Nicole Stolz was also great at the plate, singling twice and doubling. Rachel Nicolosi chipped in with a pair of singles.
Katie Hirshauer (third base), Nezveky (shortstop), Stolz (second base), Sammie Ciaccia (first base) and Ashley Ferris (catching) sparked the defense.
The Heat opened the 2003 season with a loss to the Waterbury Spirit (Ferris tripled twice, Nezvesky doubled twice, and Nicolosi singled twice while Elyssa Michaels and Courtney Mead combined for eight strikeouts on the mound) and then played in the LaGrange Pony Qualifier. The Heat lost the first game by just one run and the second by three.
The team is coming together and prepared for the Danbury ASA Tournament this weekend as well as its regular season and tournament schedule next month.
