‘Read, Read, Read’

Mrs Papp, the librarian at Hawley School, has two main goals as a library teacher. One goal is to teach the students at Hawley School to be good researchers so that they can find information for both in-school and out-of-school projects. She also wants kids to love to read.

In March, Mrs Papp is going to be having a party with the students to celebrate Dr Suess’ birthday. It should be fun!

Mrs Papp is looking forward to the Hawley library becoming automated. This should be accomplished by the end of this school year or the beginning of the next school year. When the card catalogue is automated, all of the information we usually find on cards will then be found in the computer. The students will be able to type in the name of a book title, an author’s name, or a subject, and the computer will tell us where in the library these books can be found. It will be a much easier way to look for books.

The younger grades at Hawley are learning about literature.

The Kindergartners are learning about penguins. They have read a book and watched a movie about penguins.

Grades Two and Three have been learning how to find books in a library, and have learned mainly about primary search.

The Fourth and Fifth graders are doing lots of research.

The Second graders are reading the book Wilma Unlimited. They love the book and their only question is: Is the story true?

The Third graders are reading about John Henry for Black History Month. They have the same question as the second graders: Is it a true story?

The First graders are reading the book Nate the Great.

A few weeks ago, the kids at Hawley School were able to vote on which Nutmeg Book they enjoyed the most. The winner was the book called The Million Dollar Shot. Next in line was Ella Enchanted.

Well wasn’t that exciting news? Especially the news about our outstanding librarian who cares so much about teaching our students. Her teaching will help the students throughout life.
