Postal Food Drive A Success

To the Editor,

All actions of United Way of Northern Fairfield County stem from our mission statement: we are a leader in bringing together the resources to build a better, stronger, more caring community. Last weekend, our neighbors personified this as citizens of towns and cities across the nation came together to stamp out hunger.

On Saturday, May 13, local residents in the towns of Danbury, Bethel, New Fairfield, Newtown and Ridgefield participated in the annual one-day Postal Food Drive. Sponsored by the National Association of Letter Carriers, AFL-CIO, US Postal Service, Salvation Army and United Way letter carriers collected nearly 80,000 pounds of nonperishable food items from local residents. Thereafter, about 50 United Way volunteers spent their day sorting and distributing the bounty to 17 local food banks, pantries and shelters.

As a volunteer-driven organization, United Way could not possibly affect the amount of positive change and impact we do without your help. We appreciate the support of the US Postal Service, the assistance of the Salvation Army and the recipient food agencies, the generosity of our neighbors, and the commitment of United Way’s volunteers in coming together to restock the shelves of those in need. There is no doubt that you are all valuable resources who have contributed toward building a better, stronger and, as those with formerly empty shelves can attest, more caring community.

Thank you for helping to deliver! Without you, there’s no way.

Yours truly,

Laura Waurishuk
