Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multi-Purpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of The Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For more information about programs offered at the Senior Center call 270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Wal-Mart Route 6). Cost is 65¢ each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75¢ each way for out of town. Call 748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

 

Coming Up

*CHRISTMAS AT PLATZL BRAUHAUS in Pomona, N.Y., on Tuesday, December 4, at 8:30 am. Enjoy a Christmas dinner with all the trimmings, sing along or dance with the Christmas Band. The cost is $75 per person

*ANNUAL CHRISTMAS PARTY will be on Tuesday, December 11, from 11 am to 3 pm, at The Waterview on Route 34 on the Monroe/Newtown line, with a gourmet buffet, champagne toast, 50/50 raffle, music and entertainment. Call the Newtown Senior Center for reservations, 270-4310; $35 per person.

*A 6-week CRAFT CLASS on Japanese brush painting will be offered starting Tuesday, January 8, at 1 pm. Sign up by December 20. No new students after the first class.

 

Day Trips

*Visit Broadway and see JERSEY BOYS and have lunch at Oscar’s at the famous Waldorf Astoria Hotel on Wednesday, December 5. Depart the Senior Center at 9:15 am; cost is $193 per person.

 

Recurring Activities

*COMPUTER LESSONS are given every Monday and Tuesday at 3 pm.

*BOWLING at Brookfield Lanes for Senior “Fun Bowl,” Tuesday and Thursday from noon to 3 pm.

*CARDS FOR OUR TROOPS every Tuesday morning from 10 am to noon and 1 to 3 pm.

*BEGINNERS BRIDGE LESSONS on Wednesday, 9:30 am, with Mary Matern.

*BOARD GAME DAY is every Thursday at 1 pm. Coffee or tea and snack will be supplied.

*MOVIE TIME on Fridays at 1 pm. Enjoy a good “favorite” movie with a friend. We supply the video and popcorn.

Monday: AM pinochle, hatha yoga, exercise, PM computer classes, chorus group.

Tuesday: AM, pinochle, country-western line dancing; PM Tai Chi & Chi Kung, bowling, walking for fitness, computer classes, crafts.

Wednesday: AM exercise; PM bingo, crafts.

Thursday: AM Breakfast Club, hatha yoga, cards; PM bowling, walking for fitness, board games.

Friday: AM advanced mah jongg, sewing, quilting, PM movie time, knitting, cards.

 

Menu For Week of

November 26–30

Reservations must be made 3 days in advance.

Monday: Honey roasted chicken quarter, rice pilaf, Oriental blend vegetables, potato bread, marble cake.

Tuesday: Swedish meatballs served over egg noodles, green beans, wheat dinner roll, seasonal fresh fruit, pineapple juice.

Wednesday: Lentil soup with crackers, crab cakes with tartar sauce, scalloped potato, fresh zucchini, soft breadstick, cling peaches.

Thursday: Oven fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, California blend vegetables, buttermilk biscuit, birthday cake.

Also, for planning ahead—

Monday: December 3: Spaghetti and meatballs, parmesan cheese, Caesar salad with croutons and Caesar dressing, garlic read, pears, cranapple juice.

Tuesday: December 4: Stuffed salmon with rosemary sauce, roasted potatoes, green beans, marble rye, coconut custard pie.
