Celebrate Women Programs At UConn Health Center

FARMINGTON — Celebrate Women, a women’s health membership program sponsored by the University of Connecticut Health Center, is offering a variety of health programs in July, including a special discount for the annual Sunken Garden Poetry Series in Farmington.

“TMJ (Temporomandibular Dysfunction) Theory and Practice” by Mark Litt, PhD, will present an overview of pain disorders related to TMJ, as well as information about causes and treatments for this condition. TMJ related pain disorders are characterized by pain and soreness in the jaw and may include pain when talking or chewing. These disorders disproportionately affect women and can cause significant disability. Dr Litt’s presentation will be held on Monday, July 12, from noon to 1 pm in the Health Center’s Onyiuke Dining Room (use main hospital entrance).

“Oral Conditions Associated with the Peri-menopausal Years” by Ellen Eisenberg, DMD, director of oral pathology, will provide information about chronic immune-related skin and mucus membrane conditions that seem to favor perimenopausal women. Frequently, the only site involved in these diseases is the oral cavity. Symptoms can include persistent burning sensations in the mouth and or lesions that may be painful when eating spicy foods or brushing the teeth. Dr Eisenberg’s presentation will be on Thursday, July 22, from 6:30 to 7:30, in the Charlotte Johnson Hollfelder Center for Women’s Health at the Health Center (use main hospital entrance).

“A Celebration of Women Through Poetry”: Celebrate Women members can enjoy the culture and beauty of the Sunken Garden Poetry Series on the idyllic grounds of the Hill-Stead Museum in Farmington this summer at a discounted rate of $3 per program. The readings will be held every other Wednesday through August 25 and run from 6:30 to 8:30 pm.

The Y-ME Support Group meets every other Monday in the UConn Cancer Center conference room from 5:30 to 7 pm. Women who have had breast cancer or are currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer are welcome to join. For more information, call the Y-ME of Connecticut Breast Cancer Support Organization at 800-933-4YME.

For all programs, registration is recommended. Call Celebrate Women at 866-4-FEMALE or 860-679-8899. Celebrate Women is a free membership program designed to help women of all ages enhance their health. Women who join receive free, timely health information as well as invitations to seminars and programs designed for women.
