Newtown High School Principal Chip Dumais recently honored the 22 students whose cumulative grade point averages placed them in the top five percent of the class of 2008. At an assembly on April 9, students said they plan to pursue careers in a variety of fields.
Valedictorian Claire Ober and salutatorian Elise DeRoo have both said they want to go into medicine. Several students, like Rebecca Reed, will be attending technical schools, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
Three students said they have committed to attending University of Connecticut. Other choices include competitive universities like Duke and Notre Dame and prestigious liberal arts colleges, like Swarthmore and Columbia.
NHS guidance counselors and vice principals were on hand to congratulate the students, as was Superintendent of Schools Janet Robinson.
