Skate Park

Sometime between 8 pm on October 5, and 9 am on October 6, someone used an ink marker to scrawl obscenities on a stone bench located at the Newtown Skate Park at Dickinson Park, off Brushy Hill Road, police report.

Police said that the graffiti incident was the seventh reported case of vandalism at the skate park that they have investigated since March 18.

Anyone with information on the identity of the vandal is asked to contact police at 203-426-5841.

NHS Arrest

At about 7:15 am on October 6, an altercation occurred between two students at Newtown High School, police report.

School officials and the police department’s school resource officer investigated the incident, after which police arrested one of the students, charging the student with second-degree breach of peace.

That youth was released on a written promise to appear in court on October 17, police said.

Because the person arrested is under age 18, the student’s identity is shielded from disclosure by state law.

Botsford Crash

About 5:20 pm on September 30, motorist Avery Barzan, 23, of Trumbull was driving a 2005 Ford sedan southward on South Main Street, police said.

At that time, northbound motorist Dorothy Cavanaugh, 85, of Botsford was driving a 1997 Ford sedan northward on South Main Street and then attempted to make a left turn into the Plaza South shopping center at 266 South Main Street, police said.

The two Fords then collided. There were no injuries. Police said they issued Cavanaugh an infraction for failure to grant the right of way.

Pickup Vs Pickup

At about 1:40 pm on October 5, motorist Giovanni Previti, 35, of New Britain, who was driving a 1994 Chevrolet pickup truck northward near 71 South Main Street, stopped for traffic conditions and was struck from behind by northbound motorist Christopher Ward, 38, of 15 Woodbine Lane, who was driving a 2011 Chevrolet pickup truck, according to police.

There were no injuries. Police said they gave Ward an infraction for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

DUI Arrest

After learning that police held a warrant for his arrest, Stephen Sabato, 22, of 18 Washington Avenue went to the police station on the morning of October 7 and was charged with driving under the influence and with reckless driving, according to police.

The charges stem from a July 13 one-vehicle accident that occurred near 25 Chestnut Hill Road. In that incident, the 1996 Honda Civic coupe which Sabato was driving went off the road and struck a stone wall, utility pole, and tree.  

Police said they released Sabato on $250 bail for an October 20 appearance at Danbury Superior Court.

Queen Street

Police report that at about 4:20 pm on October 5, motorist Sandra Cox, 70, of Woodbury was driving a 2004 Subaru Outback station wagon southward on Queen Street, near its intersection with Lorraine Drive, when a southbound black SUV, which was traveling in front of the Subaru, stopped, resulting in the Subaru striking the rear end of the SUV. Cox was not injured.

After the impact, Cox pulled over and stopped, police said. The unknown driver of the black SUV pulled over, but then left the scene, police said.

Police said they did not locate the black SUV. Police said they verbally warned Cox for following too closely.

Police ask anyone with information about the driver of the black SUV to contact investigating Officer Scott Ruszczyk at 203-426-5841.

Car Key

On October 7, police received for safekeeping a Toyota automotive key attached to a key chain that was found near the intersection of Main Street (Route 25) and Sugar Street (Route 302). The owner may contact police at the police station at 3 Main Street, telephone 203-426-5841, to claim the key.

Wasserman Way

Police report they stopped Arleen Schultz, 52, of Sherman about 1:37 pm on October 6 on Wasserman Way, near the commuter parking lot, to investigate a motor vehicle violation.

Police said they charged Schultz with failure to wear a seatbelt and with driving with a suspended license. Police said they released Schultz on a written promise to appear in court on October 19.

I-84 Arrest

State police report that at about 10:37 am on October 3, they stopped motorist Steven Sicard, 18, of Watertown for a motor vehicle violation on eastbound Interstate 84.

State police said that after investigating, they charged Sicard with failure to carry a vehicle registration and/or an automotive insurance identification card, with a marker plate violation, and with possession of a controlled substance (unspecified drug).

State police said they had located a small amount of narcotics in the vehicle that Sicard was driving.

Sicard was released on $250 bail for an October 24 court appearance, according to state police.

Motorcycle

State police said that motorcyclist Christopher Reddington, 23, of Waterbury was riding a 2002 Yamaha YZF-R1 on eastbound Interstate 84, near Exit 9, in stop-and-go traffic about 4 pm October 6, when the driver of a noncontact vehicle in front of Reddington applied his brakes quickly due to traffic conditions, resulting in Reddington applying his brakes quickly.

The motorcycle swerved, with Reddington losing control of it and falling off, state police said. Reddington received minor injuries for which Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps members transported him to Danbury Hospital, state police said.

Enforcement information was not available.

Radar Patrol

Police report that they were conducting a radar speed patrol on Wasserman Way, near its intersection with Nunnawauk Road, about 7:34 pm on October 8, when they detected motorist Michele Bonacci Olam, 38, of 261 Berkshire Road driving a vehicle traveling 55 miles per hour eastward on Wasserman Way in a 30-mph zone, so they stopped her to investigate.

Police said they charged Olam with traveling too fast and with driving with a suspended vehicle registration. Police said Olam is scheduled to appear on October 27 in Danbury Superior Court.

Sugar Street

A three-vehicle chain-reaction accident occurred near 49 Sugar Street at about 12:30 pm on October 9.

Police said motorist Silvestre DeSouza, 30, of Danbury, who was driving a 2002 Honda Accord sedan eastward on Sugar Street, stopped in preparing to make a left turn onto Sugar Lane.

Eastbound motorist Ivani Rodrigues, 34, of Framingham, Mass., who was driving a 2000 Ford Focus sedan, then stopped behind the Honda, police said.

Eastbound motorist Steven Kaufman, 48, of Shelton, who was driving a 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe SUV, then struck the rear end of the Ford, pushing the Ford into the rear end of the Honda, police said.

Multiple passengers from the vehicles were transported to the hospital to be treated for injuries, police said.

Police said they issued Kaufman an infraction for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart. Police said they gave DeSouza an infraction for driving without a license.

South Main Accident

Police report a two-vehicle accident near 105 South Main Street about 4:09 pm on October 10.

In that incident, southbound motorist Rosanna Spada, 29, of Milford, who was driving a 2005 Acura TSX sedan, struck the rear end of a southbound 1999 Oldsmobile 88 sedan driven by Tracey Staton, 36, of Bridgeport, police said.

There were no injuries. Spada received a written warning for following too closely, police report.

Disorderly Conduct

Police report they received a complaint about 5:05 pm on October 11 about an incident that occurred on Birch Hill Road, so they responded to the area to investigate.

Police said they charged Christopher Mocarski, 52, of 53 Birch Hill Road with disorderly conduct for allegedly shouting some foul language at a neighbor.

Police released Mocarski on $200 bail for an October 25 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

Kawasaki Crash

After traveling eastward on Palestine Road, Stephen Clark, 18, of 100 Wasserman Way, who was riding a 2002 Kawasaki KLX-110 minibike-style motorcycle, traveled past a stop sign at the intersection of Palestine Road and Hundred Acres Road and then struck some curbing at about 12:33 am on October 12, police said.

The impact threw Clark from the minibike, police said. Clark was transported to the hospital for treatment of injuries, police report. The accident is under investigation.

Larceny Charge

After learning that police held a warrant for his arrest, Andrew Cabral, 23, of 168 Huntingtown Road went to the police station on the morning of October 12 and was charged with sixth-degree larceny, police report.

Police said that Cabral allegedly stole some scrap metal from a residence on The Boulevard on July 21, which prompted them to investigate and then seek a court warrant for his arrest.

After processing, police released Cabral on $100 bail for an October 25 court appearance.

Five Charges

Police said that at about 7 pm on October 11, they stopped motorist Ian Archer, 19, of 60 Flat Swamp Road near 50 Elm Drive to investigate.

Police said they charged Archer with traveling unreasonably fast, possession of less than four ounces marijuana, possession of marijuana with intent to sell, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of an illegal knife in a motor vehicle.

After processing the case, police released Archer on $400 bail for an October 25 court appearance.

Intersection Accident

A two-vehicle accident occurred about 12:36 pm October 12 at the intersection of Sugar Street, Main Street, Glover Avenue, and South Main Street.

Motorist Kim Scriven, 45, of Johnstown, N.Y., who was driving a 2007 Hyundai sedan eastward on Sugar Street, stopped for a traffic signal at the intersection, after which the Hyundai was struck from behind by motorist Jacob Schwartz, 60, of 17 Sweet Meadow Road, who was driving a 2001 Ford Expedition SUV, police report.

There were no injuries. Police said they verbally warned Schwartz for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Altercation

About 2:50 pm on October 11, police responded to a report of a verbal altercation at a Flat Swamp Road residence.

Police said that in investigating the incident, they located two people in a traveling vehicle who had left the scene of the altercation before police had arrived.

Police said they charged the passenger in that vehicle, Marcus Graham, 20, of Waterbury with disorderly conduct and with second-degree threatening. Graham was released on a written promise to appear in court on October 25.

Also, police said that they gave the driver of that vehicle, David Hyde, 19, of 3 Owl Ridge Lane, an infraction ticket on a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia. That violation carries a $136 fine.
