Sobriety Checkpoint Set For May 28-29

State police and town police will hold a sobriety checkpoint in Newtown on the night of Saturday, May 28, and early morning hours of Sunday, May 29.

Police did not disclose where they will hold the checkpoint. Twelve police officers are expected to participate in the event.

Police will stop passing motorists to learn whether drivers are under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Brief interviews will be conducted. People who are suspected of being intoxicated will be tested for sobriety.

Violators will be arrested. Those who arrested will be brought to the police station for processing and will be issued court appearance dates.

Police also will be enforcing seatbelt laws during the checkpoint.

Last December, state police and town police took part in a sobriety checkpoint at which several arrests were made.

The overtime pay that police receive to work at such checkpoints is covered with funds from a state highway safety grant. The enforcement project is part of the “2005 Memorial Day Enforcement Program.”
