Citizens' `Police Academy' Starts Sessions Sept. 25

The Newtown Police Department is looking for people interested in learning

about law enforcement and the criminal justice system.

The department will conduct its fourth session of Citizens Police Academy

starting September 25. The free program which will be conducted in the police

station is scheduled to run for 10 consecutive Wednesday nights.

Acting Sergeant Michael Kehoe will coordinate the course.

Applications for the course are available at the police station at 3 Main

Street. People interested in participating may call police at 426-5841.

In order to conduct the course, at least 18 people must participate. A maximum

of 25 people can attend.

The academy is designed to help business people and residents get an overview

of local law enforcement.

The free course contains a "ride-along" component in which participants will

be able to ride in a patrol car for four hours to observe patrol operations.

Participants will not be placed in potentially dangerous situations and will

remain in the patrol car in the event of sensitive situations.
