Hit-and-Run

Police report a two-vehicle accident in Hawleyville in which the driver who caused the collision fled the scene of the crash.

The incident occurred about 4:24 pm on September 8 on Mt Pleasant Road, near Newtown Power Equipment at 151 Mt Pleasant Road. In the incident, an unknown vehicle passed on the right a 2011 Subaru Outback station wagon, which was making a right turn at that time, police said.

The elderly woman who was driving the Subaru was not injured. Police said the unknown vehicle, for which they have no description, left the scene of the collision. Police are investigating.

Intersection Crash

A two-vehicle accident occurred about 6:11 pm on September 10 at the four-way intersection of Hattertown Road, Poverty Hollow Road, and Key Rock Road.

In that incident, motorist Edith Sutton, 60, of Danbury, who was driving a 2017 Nissan Rogue SUV, struck a 2016 Mazda Miata roadster driven by Natalie Rodden, 37, of Southbury, police said. There were no injuries. Police verbally warned Sutton for failure to grant the right of way.

Wagon Vs Pickup

At about 3:49 pm on September 11, motorist Michael Nihill, 57, of Southbury, who was driving a 2017 Honda Ridgeline pickup truck southward on Toddy Hill Road, stopped and was waiting for traffic to clear so that he could make a left turn onto Turnberry Lane, when the Honda was struck from behind by a 2011 Subaru Outback station wagon driven by Ravi Vakacherla, 46, of Newtown, police report.

There were no injuries. Police verbally warned Vakacherla for following too closely.

Sequential Crash

Police said that at about 5:18 pm on September 11, motorist Victor Pagan, 33 of Seymour, who was driving a commercial 2019 Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck eastward on Berkshire Road, near Lone Oak Meadows, became distracted and then entered the westbound travel lane, after which he traveled along the westbound road shoulder, sequentially colliding with a utility pole, a traffic sign, two curbside mailboxes, and a stone wall.

Pagan received possible injuries and was transported by the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps to Danbury Hospital. Police said enforcement action is pending.

Chain Reaction

A three-vehicle chain-reaction accident occurred on westbound Riverside Road at its intersection with Glen Road, Church Hill Road, and Washington Avenue about 7:43 am on September 12.

In that incident, motorist John Albanese, 58, of Sandy Hook, who was driving a 2014 Subaru Impreza auto, stopped at a red traffic signal, after which motorist Eveann Stowell, 56, of Sandy Hook, who was driving a 2018 Chevrolet Equinox SUV, stopped behind the Subaru, police said.

Westbound motorist Steven Mayor, 19, of Sandy Hook, who was driving a 2012 Volkswagen Jetta sedan, then struck the rear end of the Chevrolet, pushing the Chevrolet into the rear end of the Subaru. Mayor was transported to Danbury Hospital on a report of pain, police said. Mayor received an infraction for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Hawleyville Accident

A two-vehicle accident occurred at the intersection of Old Hawleyville Road and Meridian Ridge Drive about 9:30 am on September 12, police said.

Motorist Nidhi Soman, 17, of Newtown, who was driving a 2016 Subaru Legacy sedan southward on Meridian Ridge Drive, stopped for a stop sign at that street’s intersection with Old Hawleyville Road, police said. At that time, motorist Brittney McMillan, 25, of Hamden, was driving a 2015 Nissan Altima sedan westward on Old Hawleyville Road, according to police.

The Subaru then entered the intersection and collided with the Nissan. Both drivers and two passengers in the Nissan were transported to Danbury Hospital to be checked. Police issued Soman an infraction for failure to obey a stop sign.

Flagpole Intersection

A two-vehicle accident occurred at the Main Street flagpole intersection about 8:22 am on September 13.

In that incident, motorist Joyce Zaldo, 57, of Oxford, who was driving a 2012 BMW X-3 SUV, struck the rear end of a 2015 Subaru Outback station wagon driven by Anita Lazzaro, 62, of Southbury, police said.

Lazzaro reported minor pain but refused medical attention. Zaldo received an infraction for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Truck Vs SUV

In slow-moving, congested traffic on westbound Interstate 84, near Exit 9, about 9:20 am on September 13, trucker Juan Urena, 39, of Freemansburg, Penn., who was driving a 2012 International truck, struck the rear end of a 2016 Chevrolet Traverse SUV driven by Consuelo Villegas, 43, of New Milford, state police said.

The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported Villegas to Danbury Hospital on a report of pain. Urena received an infraction for following too closely.

Oldsmobile Vs Lexus

On eastbound Interstate 84, about 500 feet west of Exit 9, at about 4:40 pm on September 13, a 2016 Lexus NX-200-T SUV, which was driven by Nicholas Robertson, 52, of Southington, slowed for traffic conditions and was then struck from behind by a 2004 Oldsmobile Alero sedan driven by Patrick Bafuma, 37, of Meriden, according to state police.

There were no injuries. Bafuma received an infraction for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Electronic Key

Police report that on the afternoon of September 13, they received for safekeeping an electronic key for a Nissan-brand vehicle, which had been found lying on a sidewalk near Edmond Town Hall at 45 Main Street. The key’s owner may contact police at the police station at 3 Main Street, telephone 203-426-5841, to identify and claim the key.

DUI Arrest

Police said they received a report at about 4:43 pm on September 16 concerning an erratic driver traveling near the Main Street flagpole, so they responded and then stopped the driver in question near Amaral Motors at 40 South Main Street, about one mile to the south.

While investigating, police found a sword and two .22-caliber rifles in the 2006 Ford F-150 pickup truck driven by John Petrocelli, 56, of Meriden. Police arrested Petrocelli on charges of driving under the influence, possession of less than one-half ounce of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, illegal possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle, criminal possession of a firearm, and violation of a protective order.

Police held Petrocelli on $10,000 bail for an arraignment on the charges on September 17 in Connecticut Superior Court in Danbury.

Church Hill Road

A two-vehicle accident occurred on eastbound Church Hill Road, near its intersection with The Boulevard, about 8:33 am on September 17.

Police said motorist Michelle Class, 29, of Newtown, who was driving a 2016 Honda Odyssey minivan, slowed for traffic conditions and was then struck from behind by motorist Joelene Melloh, 32, of New Milford, who was driving a 2005 Honda Civic auto.

There were no injuries. Melloh received a written warning for following too closely, resulting in a motor vehicle accident.

Police report a two-vehicle rear-end collision on northbound South Main Street, near its intersection with Orchard Hill Road, about 12:59 pm on September 11. Police said motorist Devon Boyingtown, 23, of New MIlford, who was driving a 2010 Mazda 3 sedan, stopped for traffic conditions, and was then struck from behind by a 2002 Buick Century sedan driven by Eleanor Winters, 84, of Monroe. Both Monroe and Buick passenger John Winters. 84, of Monroe were tyrasnported by the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps to Danbury Hospital, police said.
