Feeling Good

And Green

To the Editor:

I am still digesting the price of converting my incandescent bulbs. Wow, fluorescent bulbs appear to be approximately six times the price of the regular old bulbs. I know, I know, they last a lot longer. But, not six times longer. Can’t wait to see the “new light bulb” line-item in the budget.

Maybe I am one of the lucky people that can afford this gigantic price differential so that I can “feel good” about saving energy, polar bears, the globe and Al Gore’s reputation as some sort of “forecaster” of doom and gloom.

Just tell me what I should do with the mercury in the bulbs when they burn out and then you can consider me “green.” And maybe the unelected and soon-to-cost-us-all-more-money “energy task force” can tell me that burning coal to generate electricity so that we can all stay warm during the winter is bad, but using light bulbs with mercury in them is OK? Then, I would definitely “feel” better.

Respectfully,

Frank McDermott
