Produced and directed by music teacher Julie Bastos, the play brought not only Peter and his family to life, but also Macgregor’s famed garden.

“My sister, Hayley, is playing a cabbage,” said fourth grader Katelyn Kean excitedly. “It’s going to be great!”

Donning green- and brown-colored poster board, students also portrayed the potatoes, lettuce, and carrots young Peter notoriously munches on.

Fourth grader Jake Tollson, who recently appeared with his fourth grade classmates in Of Mice and Mozart, agreed. “I am looking forward to seeing it,” he said.

As the play commenced, fourth grader JoJo Wollman clapped her hands happily. “They’re doing a really good job,” she said.

As Peter Rabbit, first grader David Kent sang and acted with a warm confidence that prompted first grade teacher Susan Green to remark, “He’s such a star!”

Alisa Vega said she enjoyed played “Mother.”

“It was a lot of fun,” she said.

Peter’s siblings, Flopsy (Megan Primavera), Mopsy (Lilly Fulmer), and Cottontail (Megan Schloff) also said they enjoyed themselves.

“It was fun to hop around,” said Lilly.

Also featured were Katie Barrett as the mouse and Hannah Delia as the cat.

Farmer Macgregor was played by a straw hat and overall-clad Callahan Brock, who said he liked playing his role.

“It was fun!” he declared.

After the production, Ms Bastos commended the students on a job well done. “It’s a wonderful story they read as part of the first grade curriculum,” she explained. “We learned the songs in their general music classes; the students playing the starring roles came in to practice during their recess.”

Head O’ Meadow’s next production is the third grade’s 40-page adaptation of E.B. White’s Charlotte’s Web on May 28.

“It’s going to be great,” said Ms Bastos.
