Frank Middleton, who for several years has volunteered income tax assistance, is now teaching computer lessons to seniors at the Newtown Senior Center on Riverside Road and other senior centers in the area.
Director of Senior Services Marilyn Place said last week that over a dozen Senior Center members have signed up for the lessons.
Mr Middleton will teach the basics of using a computer to two seniors at a time. He taught the first class last week.
âGiving them access to the Internet and email is the main goal,â Mr Middleton said. âThey have grandkids they want to contact and receive photographs of.
âOnce they learn to use it, they will be able to write their grandchildren, read the newspaper online, or use it for word processing,â he said.
Each computer user at the Senior Center will have his or her own password for privacy, Mr Middleton noted.
Through the Das Family Foundation in Monroe, Mr Middleton was also able to obtain a new computer for the Newtown Senior Center and other area senior centers.
The computer is state of the art, âat least for today,â he said, noting how quickly the technology is changing.
