CHESHIRE - Anthony Fiore of Newtown broke in the new Cheshire Community 50-meter pool by capturing first in the 100- and 200-meter backstrokes at the recent USS/YMCA Invitational swim meet.

CHESHIRE – Anthony Fiore of Newtown broke in the new Cheshire Community 50-meter pool by capturing first in the 100- and 200-meter backstrokes at the recent USS/YMCA Invitational swim meet.

Fiore, representing the Makos in the Boys 13/14 age group, went 1:12.12 in the 100 and 2:38.76 in the 200, thus qualifying in both events for the State and Connecticut Senior Championships. Fiore added third-place finishes in the 50-, 100- and 200-meter freestyles and qualified for the State Championships in those events as well.

Meanwhile, Matt Iassogna was third in the 50 butterfly (35:85), sixth in the 50 freestyle (33:56) and sixth in the 100 backstroke (1:27.77) – all State qualifying times.

Abby Atkinson was second in the 200 breaststroke (3:08.78) as Marciate Conlon finished third in the 100 back (1:14.08), third in the 200 back (2:39.01) and 12th in the 100 freestyle (1:06.62) to qualify for the State Championships. At the same time, Jen Iassogna turned in personal bests in the 100 fly (1:17.71) and 400 free (5:18.12).

Swimming in their first USS long course meet, Emma Atkinson and Liz Gugino did well with Emma finishing eighth in the 200 breaststroke (3:20.87) and 10th in the 200 individual medley (3:03.78) and Liz turning in a fine time in the 100 free (1:10.56) and finishing 16th in the 100 back (1:21.96).

Also, Amy Robinson and Conlon competed in the 1500-meter freestyle at Wesleyan University on June 11. Maricate finished fourth at 20:00.44 while Amy finished at 22:00.42.

At the OMNI Invitational at Yale University in New Haven, Fiore finished the 200 back in 2:35.91 while Liz Gugino turned in personal best times in the 50 free (31.69), 100 free (1:09.24) and 200 free (2:37.59). Robinson finished well in the 100 fly (1;22.87) as Conlon swam a personal best in the 100 fly (1:17.30) and 400 free (5:58.59). Alex Hoolehan swam well in her first long course meet.
