Birding By Ear Field Seminar At Audubon Center
SOUTHBURY â On Saturday, June 5, at 7:30 am, a field workshop on identifying birdsong will be offered at the Audubon Center at Bent of the River. The Connecticut Ornithological Society will co-sponsor the event.
Learning to recognize birds from their songs will improve any participantâs birding skills enormously. The sanctuaryâs diverse habitats attract a variety of avian vocalists, including forest specialists Acadian flycatcher, scarlet tanager, winter wren, hooded and blackburnian warblers as well as meadow species like field sparrow, indigo bunting, blue-winged and prairie warblers.
Patrick Comins, Greg Hanisek and other top field birders will lead the day of expert instruction.
Participants should sign in at the Welcome Kiosk, where everyone can enjoy coffee and donuts before beginning to listen and learn.
Bent of the River, a 650-acre wildlife sanctuary and nature education center owned and managed by the National Audubon Society, is at 185 East Flat Hill Road in South Britain, about a half mile from Connecticut Route 172.
The centerâs grounds and trails are open to visitors seven days a week during daylight hours. Trail maps and program information are available in the Welcome Kiosk located near the visitorsâ parking area. The historic barn is open Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm.
