Eagle Watching Trip

With Audubon Naturalists

Southbury — Winter is the prime season for eagle watching and this area boasts one of the best observation sites in Connecticut at the Housatonic River’s Shepaug Dam. Eagles are lured to the ice-free water at the base of the 147-foot hydroelectric station dam, where the turbulence and force of the water not only prevent freezing, but also bring the fish to the surface. Food supply is plenty and the eagles can enjoy a veritable feast in this ideal setting.

Not that they spend most of their time feeding. According to logs kept at the Shepaug Eagle Observation Area, eagles feed only about two percent of the time. About ten percent of the time they are flying, but for the most part they are perching. For anyone interested in observing and learning more about these majestic birds, the Audubon Center at Bent of the River’s Naturalists Jim Drennan and Chris Cohen will be leading a special Eagle Watching Trip to Shepaug Dam on Sunday, February 3, from 9:30 to 11:30 am.

Registration is required; call 203-264-5098, extension 308. Children must be over the age of 7 to join in the fun. Fee is $3 for members and $5 for nonmembers.

The Audubon Center at Bent of the River is located at 185 East Flat Hill Road in South Britain, about a half mile from Connecticut Route 172 off of I-84 (Exit 14).
