Stars Continue To Stream In

By Nancy K. Crevier

Four more stars have been received by the C.H. Booth Library 75th Anniversary Gala Committee in charge of the September 29 “Diamonds In the Sky” event at Rock Ridge Country Club. The four wooden stars are among the fourteen celestial bodies transformed into works of art by area artists that will be raffled off that evening to benefit the library.

“Hawley Family Star” by Michelle Rosenthal depicts Newtown buildings and monuments related to town benefactress Mary Hawley and her family.

Betty Christensen’s star, “Living In Newtown,” is topped with a painting of The Meeting House, while other familiar aspects of Newtown — deer, turkeys, and open space — unfold on the lower points.

Those familiar with the works of Steven Kellogg will have no trouble picking out the star contributed by the popular children’s author and illustrator. “Born In Sandy Hook” captures many of his book’s characters that were created while the author lived in Sandy Hook, including Pinkerton the Great Dane, whose large pink nose is front and center on this whimsical contribution.

“Sun Struck Water Lilies” is the title of Dick McEvoy’s star, where impressionistic water lilies float on a dark blue pond across the entire surface of the piece.

Other artists include Linda Pickwick, Stephanie Adam, Paula Brinkman, Claudia Coopersmith, Bruce Degen, Ross MacDonald, Daryl Maurath, David Merrill, Ruth Newquist, and Stacey Olszewski.

Reverend Robert Weiss, pastor of St Rose of Lima Church, will serve as the evening’s auctioneer when the 14 hand-painted stars are put up on the block.

Tickets for the September 29 gala are $100 per person and can be purchased at C.H. Booth Library, 25 Main Street.
