Dynamite 5, Shelton Premier 0: The Newtown Dynamite played host to Shelton Premier for a friendly match on Saturday on Reed Field. Newtown got on the board quickly with Emma Curtis dribbling through Shelton’s midfield and defense to net the first goal of many to come. Carly Swierbut had a one-on-one opportunity that was snuffed out by the Shelton goalie. Lauren Adams followed later with a shot that was blocked right of the goal. Rebecca Gavel gathered it and put a high shot off the fingertips of the jumping goalie to complete a 2-0 halftime lead. Emily Celentano started the second half off strong with a shot and a score to the lower left corner 10 minutes in. Ali Kelleher then played a long ball to Emma Curtis down the middle of the field. Emma outran the defense and maneuvered around the charging goalie and left footed the ball deep into the goal for a 4-0 lead. Veronica Vodola finished off the scoring with a shot from the right side of the box with an assist from Nathalie Schickendantz.

Dynamite 2, Fairfield Red 0: Under cloudy skies and the anticipation of Hurricane Sandy approaching, the Newtown Dynamite played host to Fairfield Red at Tilson Field. Newtown was looking to avenge their lone loss of the season and to put themselves in first place in the league standings. The first half was a back-and-forth struggle that saw no team capitalize on the other team’s miscues. Led by Lindsay Merrifield and Audrey Benson on defense and Jackie Seras in goal, Fairfield was limited in their chances in Newtown’s defensive end. The Dynamite would break through in the second half on a corner kick from Katie Sailer. Played short of the near post, Lauren Carrino would fight the Fairfield defender for the ball and play it back along the goal line to Sailer, who sent the ball across the goal box untouched to Alison Kelleher. Alison controlled it and planted it in the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. Kristen Cirone and Samantha Bicho anchored the defense in the second half to continue to hold Fairfield off the scoreboard. With only seconds remaining in the game, Schickendantz connected on a shot that hit a Fairfield defender’s hand within the goal box. Awarded a penalty kick, Carrino stepped up for Newtown and placed the kick towards the left post for a 2-0 final.

Titans 4, Monroe 1: The Newtown Titans assured themselves a division playoff berth with a 4-1 defeat of the Monroe Warriors on Sunday. Newtown spread the scoring around this week, with goals from four different players. In the first half, Grant Moxham followed up a shot from Wally Skrelja to take a 1-0 lead. Nick Weiland dropped in a nice header with an assist by Henry Petrillo. Irwin Grewal got his first goal of the season to take the Titans to 3-0. Stubborn defense, especially from Jack Armstrong on the right wing, kept the Warriors attack at bay until just before half time when Monroe scored on a counter play. In the second period, Monroe surged back with a much-improved offensive effort, but could not manage another score, as the Titans defense and midfield responded with stand-out play from Grewal and Aidan O’Leary. Danny Arneth notched the final goal, following up on a bobbled shot from Thomas Skrelja. The 7-1-0 Titans will play their final regular game of the fall campaign at Tilson Field on Sunday against Fairfield.
