Frequently Newtowners are nice enough to stop by the office, or when they see us there, to stop by The Pleasance to tell us how much they enjoy the pleasure garden The Newtown Bee has created at 1 Main Street. They say they like the flowers, or the trees, the shady places to sit, the bubbling fountain, and even the rooster. We like all those things as well, but we have to admit that what we like to see most at The Pleasance is people. And lately, there have been quite a lot of them.

Last Saturday night, in the lingering evening light of mid-June, the Booth Library Summer Concert Series presented its first concert at The Pleasance, featuring Mary Beth Sippin and Goldrush. It looked like a scene out of a Norman Rockwell painting, with kids playing, couples strolling, and an interested and recumbent crowd sprawled on blankets and on lawn chairs across the grass listening to music. Add to that the weddings, the small parties, the preprom photo sessions, and all the other mini celebrations that bloom like the surrounding gardens on summer days, and the scene is exactly as we envisioned when we first thought to put a park on the site of an old service station.

We would like to thank all those who have been so careful to clean up after their gatherings at The Pleasance and remind everyone that this little park is there for you to use at your convenience. For private parties or functions, call Sandy Tannone at The Bee, 426-3141, to make the necessary arrangements.
