CAVIN-MORRIS GALLERY âCONTEMPORARY CERAMICS & JAPANESE PATCHWORKâ
ak/gs set 10/25 #716874
NEW YORK CITY â Cavin-Morris is presenting its third contemporary ceramic show in conjunction with an exhibition of a rare collection of Japanese and Korean patchwork textile. âContemporary Ceramics & Japanese Patchworkâ is on view through November 24.
This exhibition features studio ceramists from the United States, Australia and Japan working with glazes and porcelain as well as wood-fired works as Cavin-Morris continues its interests in classic forms but expands toward abstraction and nonutilitarian pieces.
Japanese patchwork textiles reflect the family histories and aspirations of country people. On one hand they were indicators of hardship and on the other they were recycled from textiles considered imbued with meaning and were more often than not beautiful. For several years Shari Cavin and Randall Morris, owners, have been researching and building this collection, which includes Buddhist ceremonial clothes, wrapping cloths, jubans or underkimonos, futon covers, and kesas, patched garments worn by monks to emphasize their humility.
Almost all the wide range of textiles dates from the mid-Nineteenth Century to pre-World War II. Some are older. This exhibition was inspired by the exhibition in Japan: âThe Japanese Culture Through Hagire: The Power of Fabric that Connects Time.â In fact, several textiles from that exhibition are featured in the catalog and in the Cavin-Morris show.
Featured artists whose works are on view include: Christopher Adams, Jill Bonovitz, Suk Jin Choi, John Dix, Mihara Ken, Ryoji Koie, Yohei Nishimura, Gail Nichols, Tim Rowan, Jeff Shapiro, Ryo Toyonaga and Eugene Von Bruenchenheim.
