Third Annual Breaking Away
To Cure Diabetes
NEW HAVEN â Cyclists of all ages will be coming together June 6at Albertus Magnus College for Breaking Away to Cure Diabetes. The event, which is being sponsored by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Greater New Haven Chapter (JDRF), is a unique bicycle relay race that has events and categories for all ages and experience levels.
There are four categories in which teams and children can participate.
The Breaking Away Main Event is a competitive team relay race modeled after Indiana Universityâs Little 500, and is sanctioned by the United States Cycling Federation (USFC). Teams can include any combination of USFC men, women, and competitive junior cyclists (non-USFC riders can pull a one-day license on race day). Teams will ride identical, specialized, single-speed bikes issued by the organizer on race day. Teams may exchange riders as often as they wish during the 200-lap race. Each team will complete a four-lap qualifier run to determine their team number and pit locations on the track. Entrance fees are $125 per team.
The Cutters Fun Race is based on the 1979 award winning film âBreaking Away.â The race follows the Little 500 format but this race is strictly for fun. Teams consist of four individuals and the team that finishes with the most laps completed in the allotted time will be given the opportunity to ride as the âCuttersâ in the Main Event. Entrance fees are $125 per team.
The Lance Armstrong Junior Olympic Race Series (LAJORS) is sanctioned by the USFC. Breaking Away to Cure Diabetes will include two LAJORS categories for younger riders ages 10â14 years. The races are open to licensed USFC junior riders and to the public. Entrance fees are $10 per child.
The Kids Race is open to children under the age of 10. All children participating will receive a commemorative Breaking Away patch for participating. This event is free.
All participants must provide their own helmets and noncleated cycling shoes. Only fat tire bikes are allowed in the childrenâs races. Cash prizes and trophies will be awarded to the top three places for the Main Event. Medals will be awarded for the top three places in the Cutters Race and LAJORS race. The American Cycling Association sanctions Breaking Away to Cure Diabetes.
