Gem & Mineral Show Returning

 For Golden Anniversary

DANBURY — The Danbury Mineralogical Society will hold its 50th Annual Gem and Mineral Show at Danbury High School cafeteria, Clapboard Ridge Road (Route 39), on Saturday, September 8, from 10 am to 5:30 pm, and on Sunday, September 9, from 10 am to 5 pm.

The Danbury Mineralogical Society, founded in 1948, is a non-profit educational group with members in Connecticut and New York. Its annual gem and mineral show is the club’s means of raising money to sustain the organization and help it grow. The club tries to foster interest in geology and mineralogy, especially among children, as well as older students and collectors.

Club members work locally with Scout troops, senior high school students and teachers interested in the natural sciences. The club is an enthusiastic sponsor of the new Connecticut Museum of Mining and Mineral Science in Kent.

The Gem and Mineral Show will have club displays of minerals, fossils, lapidary material and mining memorabilia from private collections. There will also be gold panning for children, with an instructor, real panning equipment and real gold to keep. Hourly door prizes will be given, as well as an end-of-show grand prize.

Dealers from all over the Northeast will be offering an array of minerals, gemstones, fossils, books, crystals and jewelry. There will be plenty of refreshments.

Admission is $3 or $2 for seniors and full-time students with ID. Children under 5 and Scouts in uniform will be admitted for free.

The society regularly meets on the first Thursday of each month from October at June 8 pm at Mill Ridge Middle School in Danbury. New members and visitors are welcome, with no obligation. Copies of the group’s monthly newsletter, The Danburite, and other publications will be available at the show. Call Michael Pollak at 914-248-6205 or Robert Burke at 775-7032 for additional information.
