Nunnawauk Meadows Project

Gets A Boost From Bankers

By Jan Howard

Nunnawauk Meadows has received a donation of $1,000 from the Newtown Savings Bank and a matching donation from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Boston for its current expansion project.

Nunnawauk Meadows is operated by Newtown Housing for the Elderly, a nonprofit corporation. The complex, which has been in existence for 27 years, provides affordable housing for persons 62 and older and handicapped or disabled people of any age.

The complex is situated on land that was provided by the State of Connecticut in 1975 and 1995.

Newtown Housing for the Elderly President John O’Byrne and Executive Director Frank DeLucia received the checks July 14 from Newtown Savings Bank Board Chairman John Martocci, President John Trentacosta, First Vice President Peg Powers, and Dave Birkins, a representative of Federal Home Loan Bank of Boston.

The expansion project includes construction of 14 new one-bedroom rental units, which will be attached to the Community Building. In addition, the expansion will improve the Community Center by adding a library, beauty parlor, arts and crafts room, and medical offices. It will also modify the laundry and lavatories to meet handicap standards.

Construction on the new addition and renovations to the Center began in March. According to Mr DeLucia, the complex has 45 acres that can be developed in the future.

The $1,000 matching donation presented by Mr Birkins was made in recognition of the Newtown Savings Bank’s commitment to the community as reflected in its active participation in the Federal Home Loan Bank of Boston’s special programs for community investment in New England.

On July 14, Mr O’Byrne and Mr DeLucia sent a letter seeking one-time donations toward the new rooms in the Community Building.

Funding categories include the library: books, bookshelves, and catalog system; arts and crafts: equipment, sink, cabinet, and shelves; hair salon: chair, sink, and shelving; and medical office: cabinets, supplies, chair, and table.

Donations toward the current project may be sent to Newtown Housing for the Elderly, Inc, Nunnawauk Meadows, 3 Nunnawauk Road, Newtown, CT 06470. Donations may be made in memory of someone. Contributions are tax deductible.
