Ballaro Dance will host “Open Air: Sandy Hook,” the company’s season gala, at Appleberry Farm in Sandy Hook.

The New York City-based dance company has been presenting a summer performance series, titled “Open Air,” featuring dance in outdoor spaces in five cities across New York State and Connecticut: Manhattan, Brockport, Buffalo, Sandy Hook, and Oyster Bay.

Set in unique places like community gardens, rooftops, and farms, the dancers both interact with each space through site-specific performances and share a traditional performance of the company’s repertory on stage spaces.

“Open Air: Sandy Hook” will be the season gala, and it is the inaugural event taking place at Appleberry Farm. The special event will be staged throughout the grounds of the historic property, both inside the barn and through the property’s gardens and green spaces.

The event is scheduled for Saturday, September 7, from 5 to 9 pm.

Rain date is September 15 if needed, with the start time moved to 4 pm.

It will begin with cocktails in the barn at 5 while dancers greet the audience with a site-specific exploration, leading observers to various locations on the farm to see dance and hear music. The formal outdoor performance, with nature as its backdrop, will start promptly at 6:30, finishing just as the sun sets.

After the show, guests will join Ballaro Dance for a celebration with tasty libations and fare from a local wood-fired pizza truck brought onsite. The evening will continue with all guests dancing the night away while toasting to a fabulous year.

The formal performance will feature a few of Ballaro Dance’s “greatest hits,” including audience favorites Jazz For Six, a fun, care-free ensemble work exploring musicality and gesture; and Stairway To Nowhere, a quirky solo composed of acrobatic feats of flexibility and power, paired with serpent-like characterization.

Several new dances will round out the repertory, engaging audiences of all ages through the company’s energized approach to modern dance.

Boston-based cellist Rob Bethel will play live in both the site-specific and repertory performances.

The event will also feature local dancers from Fineline Theatre Arts. Based in New Milford, under the direction of Kerry Gallagher, the students will perform during both the site specific and formal performances.

Ballaro Dance and Fineline have a longstanding partnership, which will be showcased at this year’s gala.

If needed, the rain date for “Open Air: Sandy Hook” will be on Sunday, September 15, beginning at 4 pm.

New York City-based modern dance company Ballaro Dance explores the importance of rhythm, musicality, and space, along with the compliment of small gesture and storytelling, to make meaning. Choreographer Marisa F. Ballaro enjoys engaging returning and first-time audience members while introducing them to her dances and their approachable nature. This choreographic goal fully supports her love of community-building while bringing people together in shared experiences.

Ballaro Dance is in its sixth New York City season.
