Town Meeting Will Set

Referendum Date

At presstime this week, Newtown’s Board of Selectmen was expected to meet on Friday morning, June 29, to set the date of a town meeting, which will in turn set the date of the next referendum on a town budget. The referendum is expected to be set for Thursday, July 12.

Normally, budget votes are scheduled for Tuesday, but both First Selectman Pat Llodra and Tax Collector Carol Mahoney urged Thursday balloting in the next round of voting to help the town meet a tight deadline on processing and delivering tax bills before August 1, provided the next budget proposal passes.

The expected July 12 vote will be the fourth round of balloting on a 2012-2013 budget proposal. The latest budget proposal was rejected by a margin of 19 votes on June 26.
